Trees are a key element in landscaping, especially in the Region of Murcia. They have a significant aesthetic impact; they help retain soil and protect it from the summer sun with their shade; they have a positive influence on birdlife, which in turn aids in the biological (chemical-free) control of mosquito and other insect pests; once established, they consume less irrigation water than lawns; their replacement cost can be high, but they have a long lifespan (with proper care).
We have been advocating for this on this blog for years. However, many owners and managers of Hacienda Riquelme seem to be convinced that gardening in Murcia can be based on the same meadows found in countries with more temperate and humid climates. Others seem to think that the fewer trees, the less gardening work. Regarding the care these trees receive from the landscaping contractor, we have always felt that it is clearly improvable.
A reader of this blog has sent us a couple of links to his websites related to trees. We find his blog (ad-free) Planting Trees and Shrubs particularly interesting due to the wealth of practical information it compiles. Hopefully, the resort management team will read this and take steps to benefit our landscaping and, consequently, all the owners.
As an example of the contents of the aforementioned blog, in the post Maps: Soil Types, Climate, Rainfall, Water, Aridity..., the author compiles a series of maps showing the characteristics of different terrains on the Iberian Peninsula. Hacienda Riquelme is located in a semi-arid, clayey area with hard water and very low rainfall. These variables influence the types of forests that can be found in a region, as shown in the following figure.
Los árboles constituyen un elemento clave de la jardinería y de forma muy especial en la Región de Murcia. Los árboles tienen un alto impacto estético; contribuyen a retener la tierra y protegerla con su sombra del sol del verano; tienen una favorable influencia en la avifauna, lo que a su vez ayuda a un control biológico (sin químicos) de las plagas de mosquitos y otros insectos; una vez arraigados consumen menos agua de riego que el césped; su coste de reposición puede ser alto, pero tienen una larga vida (si se cuidan un poco).
En este blog llevamos años defendiendo lo anterior. Sin embargo, bastantes propietarios y gestores de Hacienda Riquelme parecen estar convencidos de que la jardinería en Murcia puede basarse en las mismas praderas que hay en países con climas más templados y húmedos. Otros parece que piensan que, cuantos menos árboles, menos trabajo de jardinería. En cuanto a los cuidados que estos árboles reciben por parte del contratista de jardinería, siempre hemos opinado que son manifiestamente mejorables.
Un lector de este blog nos ha mandado un par de enlaces a sitios web suyos relacionados con los árboles. Nos parece de particular interés su blog (sin publicidad) Plantar árboles y arbustos por la gran cantidad de información práctica que recopila. Ojalá que los responsables del resort lo lean y tomen medidas que beneficien a nuestra jardinería y por tanto a todos los propietarios.
A modo de ejemplo de los contenidos del citado blog, en la entrada Mapas: tipos de suelo, clima, pluviosidad, aguas, aridez... su autor recopila una serie de mapas en las que aparecen las características de las diferentes terrenos de la península Ibérica. Hacienda Riquelme está en una zona de terreno arcilloso, semiárido, con agua dura y muy baja pluviosidad. Estas variables condicionan el tipo de bosques que se pueden encontrar en una región, tal y como muestra la figura siguiente.
