Desde el principio, Hacienda Riquelme se ha caracterizado por la presencia de muchas especies de aves. Los lagos contribuyen en gran medida a ello. En los últimos años, la variedad de especies que nos visitan en diferentes épocas de año parece haber disminuído. Aún así, la observación de aves sigue siendo un atractivo más del resort.

Since the beginning, Hacienda Riquelme has been characterized by the presence of many species of birds. Lakes contribute greatly to this. In recent years, variety of species that visit us at different seasons seems to have decreased. Still birdwatching remains an extra attraction of the resort.

Esta mañana tuvimos la grata sorpresa de ver un número inusualmente alto de porrones europeos en el lago situado entre las fases 1 y 2. Había más de 40, y también los residentes habituales, pochas, gallinetas y zampullines. Hacía mucho que no observábamos algo así. Un espectáculo digno de apreciar y difrutar.
This morning we were pleasantly surprised by an unusually high number of European Pochards in the lake between phases 1 and 2. There were more than 40, and also the usual residents, Coots, Moorhens and Little Grebes. It's a long time since we watched something like this. Worthwile appreciating and enjoying.

Gestionar Hacienda Riquelme requiere mucho trabajo y responsabilidad. Un presupuesto anual de más de 3.000.000 € y 1864 apartamentos dan fe de ello. Es normal que no todo el mundo esté de acuerdo con todas las decisiones que se toman.
Pero lo que no es normal es que, ante críticas y sugerencias, la reacción de los responsables sea censurar los comentarios de propietarios en las redes sociales e ignorar sistemáticamente cualquier discrepancia.
Los que invirtieron sus ahorros en el resort quieren lo mejor para él. Por eso creemos necesario denunciar las decisiones erróneas, en algún caso disparatadas.
El pasado 20 de diciembre publicamos la entrada Algo va mal con la jardinería en Hacienda Riquelme en la que se criticaba la poda de olivos realizada y también otros aspectos de la jardinería.
Que se necesita reducir el consumo de agua, es algo que hemos dicho en este blog muchas veces desde 2010. Como ejemplo puede ver las siguientes entradas:

Uno de los criterios que más ayudan a la reducción de ese consumo es el ajardinamiento con plantas autóctonas. Lo sabíamos y así nos lo han confirmado socios de ANSE (Asociación de Naturalistas del Sudeste). Esto es algo que en Hacienda Riquelme apenas se tiene en cuenta.
Tampoco se tiene en cuenta que este resort está en Murcia y no debe ajardinarse al estilo inglés, francés, u otros muy diferentes del original. Los caprichos de responsables que llevan demasiados años en el cargo nos cuestan dinero. Vea las siguientes 5 fotos y hágase su propia opinión (clic sobre cualquier foto para ampliarla).
Managing Hacienda Riquelme requires a lot of work and responsibility. An annual budget of more than €3,000,000 and 1,864 apartments are proof of this. It is normal that not everyone agrees with all the decisions taken.
But what is not normal is that, in the face of criticism and suggestions, the reaction of those responsible is censorship of comments by owners on social media and the systematic ignoring of any discrepancy.
Those who invested their savings in the resort want the best for it. That is why we believe it is necessary to report wrong, and in some cases crazy decisions.

One of the criteria that helps most in reducing this consumption is landscaping with native plants. We knew it and it has also been confirmed by members of ANSE (Association of Southeast Naturalists). This kind of landscaping is something hardly done in Hacienda Riquelme.
It is also not taken into account that this resort is in Murcia and should not be landscaped in English, French, or any other style that is very different from the original. The whims of managers who have been in office for too many years also costs us money. See the photos in this post and make your own opinion (click on any picture to enlarge it).
El cormorán es un visitante invernal del resort. A lo largo de los años le hemos dedicado varias entradas y publicado diversas fotos, algunas de ellas espectaculares. En 2021, de momento, solo hemos visto el solitario ejemplar de la siguiente foto.
The cormorant is a winter visitor to the resort. Over the years we have dedicated several posts to it and published various pictures, some of them impressive. In 2021, at the moment, we have only watched the solitary specimen in the photo below.
Hacia las 17:30 del pasado 21 de diciembre, Carmen, una vecina que circulaba en coche hacia la salida del resort, tuvo que parar cerca del nº200 de la calle Atlántico. La razón fue un erizo cruzando la calzada. Nuestra vecina se bajó del coche, se aseguró que nadie atropellara al animal y grabó el breve vídeo (30") siguiente ¡Hay vida silvestre en el resort y vecinos que la aprecian!
Around 17:30 on December 21, Carmen, a neighbour driving to the resort exit, had to stop near number 200 of Atlántico street. The reason was a hedgehog crossing the road. Our neighbour got out of the car, made sure that nobody ran over the animal and recorded the short video (30") below. There is wildlife in the resort and there are neighbours that appreciate it!

It is not the first time that people has sent us a video or photos of a hedgehog at Hacienda Riquelme. You can see them in the posts A hedgehog at the resort (2019) and The hedgehog and the lizard (2020).
El pasado martes 17 de diciembre, personal de la empresa de jardinería del resort realizó una poda salvaje de los olivos situados en las proximidades de Atlántico 150. También en los olivos de otras zonas, aunque sin llegar al mismo nivel. Como consecuencia, se causó un destrozo intolerable en nuestro patrimonio arbóreo y se demostró la absoluta incompetencia del responsable o responsables de dar esa orden.
El olivo es un árbol típico del sur de España, de lento crecimiento, que no necesita este tipo de podas, que amenazan su supervivencia.
Los árboles son la parte más importante de nuestra jardinería. Además de su valor estético, retienen la tierra, facilitan la biodiversidad, dan sombra en verano y, una vez arraigados, requieran menos agua y mantenimiento.
Por todo lo anterior y por el elevado importe que la comunidad de propietarios paga por la jardinería, el error es inaceptable. Las disculpas del contratista llegan tarde.
Last Tuesday, December 17, staff from the resort's landscaping company carried out a a nonsense extremely strong pruning of the olive trees located in the vicinity of Atlántico 150. Also in the olive trees of other areas, although without reaching the same level. Therefore, an intolerable destruction was caused to our arboreal heritage and demonstrated the absolute incompetence of those responsible for giving that order.
The olive tree is typical of southern Spain, slow growing, that does not need this type of pruning, which threatens its survival.
Trees are the most important part of our gardening. In addition to their aesthetic value, they retain the land, encourage biodiversity, provide shade in summer, and once established, require less water and maintenance.
For all the above and for the high amount of money that the owner’s community pays for gardening, the error is unacceptable. Contractor's apologies come too late.
Pero lo anterior es solo la punta del iceberg. Cada vez más gente está harta de la gestión que se está realizando de nuestras zonas verdes. En la pasada AGM, y también por escrito, se ha insistido en que Hacienda Riquelme es un resort de estilo semi rústico. Como tal debe preservarse, puesto que así se diseñó y en él invirtieron los propietarios su dinero.
Otra cosa es que la escasez de agua obligue a introducir cambios en la jardinería. Eso es fácil de entender y asumir.
Pero lo que es completamente diferente es que se aproveche la disculpa de la falta de agua para introducir cambios que, como poco, muchos consideran horteras, caprichosos y arbitrarios.
Se pueden ver algunos ejemplos en las siguientes fotos.
But the above is just the tip of the iceberg. More and more people are fed up with the management that is being carried out in our green areas. In the last AGM, and in writing, it has been insisted that Hacienda Riquelme is a semi-rustic style resort. As such it must be preserved, since that is how it was designed, and the owners invested their money in it.
Another thing is that the water shortage forces to introduce changes in the gardening. This is easy to understand and assume.
But what is completely different is to take advantage of the lack of water to introduce changes that, at the very least, many consider tacky, capricious and arbitrary.

Todavía hay más temas. Uno es el escaso desarrollo de los árboles en ciertas zonas del resort, de lo que ya hablamos en diversas entradas de este blog.
Otro es el sistemático silencio por parte de los responsables y a lo largo de muchos años ante las sugerencias, peticiones, quejas, consultas, fotos, archivos pptx… enviados por otros propietarios.
Hay gente que parece creer que el resort es solo suyo y que el hecho de trabajar mucho, cosa que no dudamos, justifica cualquier decisión, aunque no se respeten los derechos de otros.
Ojalá que algunos con su dimisión contribuyan a que Hacienda Riquelme siga siendo el resort más bonito de Murcia.
There are still more topics. One is the very poor development of trees in certain areas of the resort. We have already talked about it in several posts in this blog.
Another is the systematic silence over many years by the people responsible, whenever they receive suggestions, requests, complaints, queries, photos, pptx files ... sent by other owners.
There are people that seem to believe that the resort is only theirs and that the fact of working hard, what we do not doubt it, justifies any decision, even if the rights of others are not respected.
Hopefully the pending resignation of some will help Hacienda Riquelme continue being the most beautiful resort in Murcia.

La semana cultural de la que hablamos en la entrada anterior, se celebró según lo previsto en la ciudad de Cartagena entre el 8 y el 17 de octubre. Fue un gran éxito al que contribuyeron una trabajada organización y unos ponentes de primer nivel.
Allí estuvieron los propietarios de los conocidos canales de YouTube Academia Play, Un Tío Blanco Hetero, Fernando Díaz Villanueva y Santiago Armesilla.
Allí estuvo José Luis López-Linares, director del documental España, la primera globalización, del que hemos hablado en varias entradas y que tanto éxito está teniendo en los cines.
Asistieron economistas como Ramón Tamames, escritores y politólogos como el argentino Marcelo Gullo, autor del superventas Madre Patria, y el colombiano Pablo Victoria, o investigadores como Luis Gorrochategui, cuya obra Contra Armada ha sido publicada en el Reino Unido (Luis intervino en el documental de Lucy Worsley al que nos referimos en la entrada BBC FOUR y la verdadera historia de la Gran Armada).
No podemos citar aquí a todos los participantes. Hubo historiadores, periodistas, novelistas, divulgadores y, muy importante, empresarios de ambos lados del charco.
Tampoco faltaron amigos texanos, entre los que se encontraban la cónsul honoraria de España en El Paso y hasta un descendiente del apache Gerónimo.
Todas las conferencias y mesas redondas podrá verlas en el canal de YouTube de la Asociación Cultural Héroes de Cavite.

The cultural week we talked about in the previous post, was held as planned in the city of Cartagena between October 8 and 17. It was a great success to which a hard-working organization and top-notch speakers contributed.
There were the owners of the acquaintances YouTube channels Academia Play, Un Tío Blanco Hetero, Fernando Díaz Villanueva and Santiago Armesilla.
There was José Luis López-Linares, director of the documentary Spain, the first globalization, which we have talked about in several entries and which is having so much success in theaters.

There were also no shortage of Texan friends, among whom was the honorary consul of Spain in El Paso and even a descendant of the Apache Geronimo.

Durante los últimos meses, hemos publicado varias entradas sobre el proyecto de documental España, la primera globalización. Por fin, el 2 de octubre ha tenido lugar el preestreno en Madrid con gran éxito.
El cine estaba abarrotado y al finalizar la proyección hubo una larguísima ovación de los asistentes al director José Luis López-Linares.
Muchos de los historiadores, economistas, filósofos, periodistas, etc, que participan en el documental asistieron al preestreno. Allí estaban Elvira Roca (autora de los ensayos Imperiofobia y Leyenda Negra y Fracasología), Marcelo Gullo (autor de Madre Patria) y Pedro Insúa, solo por citar algunos.

In recent months, we have published several posts about the documentary project Spain, the first globalization. Finally, on October 2 the preview has taken place in Madrid with great success.
The cinema was crowded and at the end of the screening there was a long standing ovation from the audience for director José Luis López-Linares.
The preview was attended by many of the historians, economists, philosophers, journalists, etc., who participate in the documentary. There were Elvira Roca (author of the essays Imperiophobia and Black Legend and Fracasology), Marcelo Gullo (author of Madre Patria) and Pedro Insúa, among others.

En la entrada Dragones de cuera dijimos muy de pasada que en 1774 el capitán Juan Bautista de Anza logró encontrar una ruta terrestre desde el presidio de Tubac, en Sonora, hasta Alta California.
Al año siguiente, ya ascendido a teniente coronel, Anza condujo en una nueva expedición a varios centenares de colonos y soldados con sus familias y abundante ganado. Estos colonos fueron quiénes llevaron el idioma, las costumbres, la religión y la cultura española a esa parte del mundo.
Anza continuó viaje hasta la bahía de San Francisco, donde escogió el lugar en el que se emplazarían un presidio y una misión, germen de la actual ciudad de San Francisco. Todo esto ocurría en 1776, al mismo tiempo que las 13 colonias británicas de la costa este proclamaban su Declaración de Independencia.
En la web del National Park Service (NPS) de los Estados Unidos de América puede encontrar un vídeo con la narración de esta epopeya en un corrido. El corrido es un género musical en México que narra la historia verdadera de un personaje real y/o mítico. En este caso, el rigor histórico y la realización son impecables. Y las intérpretes cantan muy bien.

In the post Cuera dragoons (Leather Jacket Soldiers) we said in passing that in 1774 Captain Juan Bautista de Anza managed to find a land route from the Tubac presidio, in Sonora, to Alta California.
The following year, already promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Anza led several hundred settlers and soldiers with their families and abundant livestock on a new expedition. These settlers were the ones who brought the Spanish language, customs, religion and culture to that part of the world.
Anza continued his journey to San Francisco Bay, where he chose the place to locate a presidio (fort) and a mission, the seed of the current city of San Francisco. All this happened in 1776, at the same time that the 13 British colonies on the east coast proclaimed their Declaration of Independence.
On the website of the National Park Service (NPS) of the United States of America you can find a video with the narration of this epic in a corrido. The corrido is a musical genre in Mexico that tells the true story of a real and / or mythical character. In this case, the historical rigor and the realization are impeccable. And the performers sing very well.

In the information building that Polaris World had very close to the entrance to the resort, a group of British volunteers coordinated by Peter Rowland provides a useful service to the residents in Hacienda Riquelme.

El agua para el riego de las zonas verdes de Hacienda Riquelme lo suministra la desalinizadora de Valdelentisco. Esperemos que en un futuro próximo la cantidad suministrada, tan necesaria para la preservación de nuestros jardines, aumente.

En este blog hemos escrito bastante sobre cuestiones históricas que implicaban a británicos y españoles.
