Un cántabro en el cantón / A Cantabrian in the canton

The cantonal uprising in Cartagena was a tragic event. Historians continue trying to improve their knowledge of what happened and assess the motivations of their leaders. Civilians and the city paid a high price for them.

The historian Elisa Gomez Pedraja has just published an excellent article entitled Pedro Gutiérrez de la Puente "A campurriano in the canton". It is available at the number 12 of the biannual magazine by the Genealogist Association of Cantabria (ASCAGEN).

Elisa investigates the biography of the title character, but also provides plenty of additional information on the events at Cartagena, the fate of many cantonalists and the life in the nineteenth century.

Pedro Gutiérrez de la Puente (1818-1875) played an important role in the canton of Cartagena. He was born in Mazandredo, province of Cantabria (formerly Santander) in 1818 and migrated to Cuba in 1840. He married in 1843 with Carlota Lagorio, born in Cartagena. In 1858 he sold the tobacco business that owned in Havana and the family returned to Spain settling in Cartagena in 1859.

He was Republican minded and very active in politics. In 1868 he became a member of the Supreme Revolutionary Board, formed after the Glorious (the revolution of 68). He was the only one that protested against this Board about the Provisional Government designation in Madrid early 1869, done without taking into account other opinions.

On July 12th, 1873, he participated in the start of the Cantonal Revolution and was unanimously appointed Chairman of the Public Safety Board of Cartagena. He was also manager of the Mint of Cartagena since its foundation, where the famous cantonal duros (5 pesetas) were coined.

Pedro Gutiérrez de la Puente is quoted in the National Episodes by Benito Perez Galdós, in the volume From Cartagena to Sagunto.

His wife Carlota died in his cottage on August 7th, days before the siege of Cartagena started.

After the fall of the city, Pedro was one of those who fled to Oran in the frigate Numancia. Later he moved to Switzerland. He died in Geneva on April 23rd, 1875. Several months later he got a death sentence from the Central Government.
