The construction of a big resort as Hacienda Riquelme two kilometers away from Sucina was a great opportunity to achieve mutual benefits.
Hacienda Riquelme requires a wide variety of services. Who has not ever needed a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician, a vet, a hairdresser, a hardware store, or buying something urgently in a shop? Almost everything can be found today in Sucina (1).
Restaurants, cafes and food in general are a sector that has grown a lot and deserves a special mention.
Besides, you have concerts and festivals, mainly in summer, that complement the offer of El Cason and El Palomar and have made this Murcian village the center of leisure in the district. Much of this has been possible thanks to the numerous initiatives of our indefatigable major. And not only to him. How many small villages organize a festival of flamenco, or so worthy Holy Week processions, or have a drums and bugles band, or music groups like Siempre Falta Alguno (Someone Is Always Missing)?
All this professional and leisure activity circulates money, pays taxes and, most important, creates jobs. Everyone benefits: Residents in the resort because they get services that improve their quality of life. Sucina neighbours because by answering to this services demand, they perform an economic activity that generates them revenue.
That a large farm linked to an aristocratic family (2) has become one of the most beautiful resorts of Murcia is undoubtedly a great benefit for many. But is it the same in other fields, apart from economy?
In the ecological aspect, we believe the balance is also very positive. Hacienda Riquelme and Sucina border the ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds) Monte El Valle and Sierras de Altaona y Escalona. In a few kilometers there are two other ZEPAs, the Mar Menor and the Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar (3). We have always enjoyed an interesting birdlife in the nearby. Years ago, the Community of Murcia showed this when they edited some leaflets describing several routes near the resort and Sucina (4).
The resort with the golf course and especially with its five lakes, has boosted very much the variety of birds that frequent the area. Now they are not only birds specific of areas and rainfed crops. The number of species that visit us, and in some cases living and breeding here, has increased with the presence of waterfowl and shorebirds. Over 80 species have been watched during the last six years in the resort (5).
In short, we believe that from both economic and ecological point of views, Hacienda Riquelme and Sucina make a good team. Hopefully the synergies between them continue developing over many years.

La construcción de un gran resort como Hacienda Riquelme a dos kilómetros de Sucina constituyó una gran oportunidad de lograr beneficios mutuos.
Hacienda Riquelme requiere una amplia variedad de servicios ¿Quién no ha necesitado alguna vez un carpintero, un fontanero, un electricista, una veterinaria, una peluquería, una ferretería, o comprar algo con urgencia en algún comercio? De casi todo podemos encontrar hoy en Sucina (
1).
Mención aparte merecen la hostelería y la alimentación, servicios de los que se ha ido desarrollando una amplia oferta.
Además están los conciertos y las fiestas que, sobre todo en verano, complementando la oferta de El Casón y El Palomar, han convertido a esta pedanía murciana en el centro del ocio de la comarca. En buena medida esto ha sido posible gracias a las numerosas iniciativas de nuestro incombustible alcalde pedáneo. Y no sólo a él ¿Cuántos pequeños pueblos organizan un festival de flamenco, o unas procesiones de Semana Santa tan dignas, o tienen una banda de tambores y cornetas, o grupos de música como Siempre Falta Alguno?
Toda esta actividad, profesional y lúdica mueve dinero, paga impuestos y, lo más importante, genera puestos de trabajo. Todos salimos beneficiados. Los residentes en el resort porque obtienen servicios que mejoran su calidad de vida. Los vecinos de Sucina porque al responder a esa demanda de servicios realizan una actividad económica que les produce ingresos.
Que una gran finca agrícola ligada a una familia aristócrata (
2) haya devenido en uno de los resort más bonitos de Murcia supone sin duda un gran beneficio para muchos. Pero ¿Ocurre lo mismo en otros terrenos, aparte del económico?
En el aspecto ecológico, creemos que el balance es también muy positivo. Hacienda Riquelme y Sucina lindan con la ZEPA (Zona de Especial Protección para las Aves) de Monte El Valle y Sierras de Altaona y Escalona. A pocos kilómetros hay otras dos ZEPAs, la del Mar Menor y las Salinas de San Pedro del Pinatar (
3). En los alrededores tenemos desde siempre una interesante riqueza ornitológica. Así lo puso de manifiesto la comunidad de Murcia al editar hace años unos folletos en la que se describían varios itinerarios por lugares próximos al resort y a Sucina (
4).
La urbanización con el campo de golf y en particular con sus cinco lagos, ha potenciado mucho la variedad de aves que frecuentan la zona. Ahora no son sólo las propias de áreas y cultivos de secano. El número de especies que nos visitan, y en algunos casos residen y se reproducen por aquí, ha aumentado con la presencia de aves acuáticas y limícolas. Más de 80 especies han sido observadas en los últimos años en el resort (
5).
Resumiendo, creemos que desde los puntos de vista económico y ecológico Hacienda Riquelme y Sucina forman un buen equipo. Ojalá las sinergias entre ambos se continúen desarrollando muchos años más.
