El análisis del proyecto de reforma del paisajismo presentada a los propietarios del resort plantea un buen número de comentarios y preguntas (vea las imágenes al final).
The analysis of the landscaping reform project presented to the owners of the resort raises a good number of comments and questions (see the images below).

1. El proyecto llena el resort de piedras de colorines y ajardinamientos de fantasía, que ni encajan con el estilo del resort, ni son necesarios en todos los lugares donde pretenden hacerlo ¿A gusto de quién se ha hecho el diseño?
   The project fills the resort with colored stones and fantasy landscaping, which neither fit in with the style of the resort, nor are they necessary in all the places where they intend to do so. Whose taste has the design been made to?
2. Los trabajos en zonas de GNK son más de lo mismo. Con el agravante de que utilizan el dinero de los propietarios para hacer intervenciones “barrocas” en sitios que no nos pertenecen ¿Por qué no arreglamos también la carretera RM-F19 desde el resort a Sucina?
   Works in GNK areas are more of the same. With the aggravating circumstance that they use owners' money to carry out “baroque” interventions in places that do not belong to us, why don't we also fix the RM-F19 road from the resort to Sucina?
3. La Comunidad General no es una empresa ¿Tiene legalmente derecho a invertir nuestro dinero en terrenos que no son de nuestra propiedad?
   The General Community is not a company. Does it have the legal right to invest our money in land that is not our property?
4. Los bocetos del proyecto muestran que se pretende hacer varios muretes de piedra ¿Por qué no se reparan y mantienen los existentes, que hay bastantes piedras que se han desprendido de ellos?
   The sketches of the project show that it is intended to make several stone walls. Why are the existing ones not repaired and maintained, as there are quite a few stones detached from them?
5. Parece que los árboles a plantar en las zonas de la Comunidad General serán solo pinos, cipreses y “chamaerops humilis” ¿No hay otras especies más acordes con la jardinería original del resort?
   It seems that the trees to be planted in the areas of the General Community will only be pines, cypresses and “chamaerops humilis”. Aren't there other species more in line with the original gardening of the resort?
6. También quieren plantar palmeras, pero en las zonas de GNK ¿Por qué no las reponen en las piscinas?
   They also want to plant palm trees, but in the GNK areas, why don't they replenish them at the pools?
7. En los bocetos se ven muchos arbustos y setos ¿Por qué no se reponen antes los que hay en mal estado en muchos apartamentos y subcomunidades?
   In the sketches you can see a lot of bushes and hedges. Why don't replace sooner those that are in poor condition in many apartments and sub-communities?
8. Del cuidado (y podado) de olivos y otros árboles no se dice nada ¿Se seguirá con la destructiva política actual?
   Nothing is said about the care (and pruning) of olives and other trees. Will the current destructive policy continue?
9. El proyecto presentado es complejo y caro. Se pague como se pague, todo indica que terminará suponiendo un importante incremento de costes ¿Quién se cree eso de que “las cuotas no subirán”?
   The project presented is complex and expensive. Regardless of how it is paid, everything indicates that it will end up assuming a significant increase in costs. Who believes that "fees will not go up"?
10. Existen alternativas mucho más sencillas, más económicas, más ecológicas y menos kisch. Pero de esas tampoco dicen nada ¿A quién beneficia este proyecto (a los propietarios no)?
    There are much simpler, cheaper, more ecological and less kisch alternatives. But they don't say anything about those either. Who benefits from this project (not the owners)?

La necesaria reforma de la jardinería se puede hacer de otra manera. La que nos han presentado solo podemos calificarla de megalómana y repleta de disparates. Los ahorros de los que hablaron cuando pasamos al modelo de autoadministración no se han visto por ninguna parte. Con la jardinería tampoco parece que haya intención de ahorrar. Además, van camino de convertir el resort en el más hortera de Murcia. Si los gestores no entienden esto, mejor que se vayan. Claro que, a pesar de los años que llevan en España, algunos no entienden nada, ni siquiera el idioma español.
The necessary landscaping reform can be done in another way. The one that has been presented to us can only be described as megalomaniac and full of nonsense. The savings they talked about when we moved to the self-management model are nowhere to be seen. With gardening, there does not seem to be any intention of saving either. In addition, they are on their way to turning the resort into the most tacky in Murcia. If the managers don't understand this, they'd better go. Of course, despite the years they have been in Spain, some do not understand anything, not even the Spanish language.

Algo va mal con la jardinería en Hacienda Riquelme (4) / Something is wrong with Hacienda Riquelme gardening (4)

El 31 de enero, los propietarios del resort recibieron por email documentación sobre el proyecto de reforma de la jardinería. Una vez estudiada la propuesta del Comité de Hacienda Riquelme, nos oponemos a él por las siguientes razones:

1. La propuesta implica un cambio radical del estilo del resort, pasándose de uno Mediterráneo a otro que obedece al gusto de algunos miembros del Comité, desconocedores del clima mediterráneo y de las consecuencias legales derivadas de la modificación, sin el consentimiento expreso de todos sus propietarios. No se está respetando el diseño original por el que los propietarios decidieron invertir su dinero en este resort.

2. Una cosa es reemplazar césped por piedras para ahorrar agua y otra diferente intervenir en zonas que no tienen césped y por tanto tampoco necesitan piedras.

3. El ahorro de agua se consigue con plantas autóctonas, que son totalmente ignoradas en el proyecto ¿Va a ser todo cipreses y palmitos (o como se llamen)?

4. En los bocetos se ven muchas flores. No será precisamente para ahorrar agua...

5. Se está sustituyendo césped por piedras desde hace años. Si cada vez hay más piedras, menos césped que mantener y menos consumo de agua ¿Dónde están los ahorros en jardinería y agua de riego?

6. Un contrato de 8 años con la empresa de jardinería resulta inconcebible ¿Es del todo legal o podría haber otras cosas?

7. Intervenir en zonas pertenecientes al campo de golf con el dinero de todos los propietarios es inaceptable. Sobre todo porque la jardinería del resort es muy deficiente en algunas zonas ¡Arreglen primero lo que hay!

8. Tras las muy serias acusaciones de Imont contra el actual Comité, creemos que el equipo gestor no está legitimado para presentar un proyecto así ¡Les pedimos que dimitan!

Este breve vídeo (57") ha sido grabado en el "jardín privado" de un miembro del Comité. This short video (57") has been shot in the "private garden" of a member of the Committee. In it you can see trees planted next to the facade, beautiful olive trees with a ridiculous pruning, absolutely improper of Spain, many whim interventions in common areas. Is this style the one owners want? Please note this is Spain not UK.

Pharaonic plans for GNK land while there are areas of the General Community almost abandoned many years ago.

On January 31, the owners of the resort received documentation about the landscaping reform project by email. After studying the proposal of the Riquelme Treasury Committee, we reject it for the following reasons:

1. The proposal implies a radical change in the style of the resort, moving from one Mediterranean to another that obeys the taste of some members of the Committee, unaware of Mediterranean climate and of legal consequences derived from the modification, without the express consent of all its owners. The original design for which the owners decided to invest their money in this resort is not being respected.

2. To replace grass with stones to save water is a thing and quite another to intervene in areas that do not have grass and therefore do not need stones.

3. Saving water is achieved with native plants, which are totally ignored in the project. Is it going to be all cypresses and palm hearts (or whatever they are called)?

4. Many flowers are seen in the sketches. It will not be to save water... 5. Grass has been replaced by stones for years. If there are more and more stones, less grass to maintain and less water consumption, where are the savings in gardening and irrigation water?

6. An 8-year contract with the gardening company is inconceivable. Is it fully legal or could there be other things?

7. Works in areas belonging to the golf course with the money of all the owners is unacceptable. Especially because landscaping of the resort is very poor in some areas. Fix our problems first!

8. After Imont's very serious accusations against the current Committee, we believe that the management team is not legitimized to present such a project. We ask for their resignation!

Estorninos negros / Spotless Starlings

Hacienda Riquelme es un buen lugar para observar aves. Los estorninos negros son especialmente abundantes en el resort y no es raro ver bandadas de miles de ellos haciendo espectaculares acrobacias. Un ejemplo es este vídeo (44") grabado por nuestra vecina Carmen, que ha tenido la amabilidad de enviarnos.

Hacienda Riquelme is a good place for birdwatching. Spotless starlings are especially abundant in the resort and you can often see huge flocks doing spectacular acrobatics (murmuring). An example is this video (44") shot by our neighbour Carmen that she has kindly sent us.

Playa de Poniente / West Beach

En nuestra anterior entrada, hablamos de los naufragios ocurridos en los alrededores del Cabo de Palos.

El más dramático de todos fue el del trasatlántico italiano Sirio, en 1906. Era un buque que transportaba principalmente emigrantes con destino a Brasil, Uruguay y Argentina. Iba abarrotado porque muchos de los pasajeros viajaban como polizones. Por eso, nunca se sabrá el número exacto de muertos, aunque fueron centenares.

La conocida escritora cartagenera Lola Gutiérrez ha publicado una preciosa novela romántica con trasfondo histórico, Playa de Poniente. Está ambientada en ese naufragio y relata con todo detalle los terribles hechos que acontecieron.

A veces se habla del Sirio como el Titanic español (o más bien italiano) pero, en realidad, el Titanic fue el Sirio inglés. El Titanic se hundió en 1912.

Playa de Poniente es un éxito de ventas y, en el momento de escribir esta entrada, va por su tercera edición. Seguro que habrá más.

In our previous post, we talked about the shipwrecks that occurred in the surroundings of Cabo de Palos.

The most dramatic of all was that of the Italian ocean liner Sirio, in 1906. It was a ship that mainly transported emigrants bound for Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. She was overcrowded because many of the passengers were traveling as stowaways. For this reason, the exact number of dead will never be known, although there were hundreds.

The well-known Cartagena writer Lola Gutiérrez has published a beautiful romantic novel with a historical background, Playa de Poniente. It is set in that shipwreck and recounts in detail the terrible events that occurred.

Sirio is sometimes referred to as the Spanish (or rather Italian) Titanic, but in reality, the Titanic was the English Sirio. The Titanic sank in 1912.

Playa de Poniente is a bestseller and, at the time of writing this post, it is in its third edition. We are sure there will be more.

En este blog hemos hablado a menudo de historia, en especial de la Región de Murcia. Ahora vamos a hablar de un libro recién publicado sobre los naufragios ocurridos cerca del Cabo de Palos.

Cabo de Palos es un pueblo tranquilo en invierno y bullicioso en verano. Toma su nombre del cabo en el que se asienta, coronado en su punto más alto por un imponente faro. En contraste con la placidez invernal y sus bullangueros estíos, sus aguas han sido testigo de numerosas catástrofes marítimas.

Jorge Bañón nos deja un catálogo de 26 barcos de nombre conocido e innumerables más de filiación desconocida, cuyo trágico final se narra en las páginas del libro. El lector asistirá al hundimiento de buques fenicios, romanos o de piratas bereberes. También conoceremos los buques de la emigración, cargados de pasaje, que rindieron su última travesía en estas aguas.

Un pequeño gran libro que merece la pena leer.

We have often talked in this blog about Region of Murcia history. Now we are going to talk about a recently published book on the shipwrecks that occurred near Cabo de Palos.

Cabo de Palos is a quiet town in winter and bustling in summer. It takes its name from the cape on which it sits, crowned at its highest point by an imposing lighthouse. In contrast to the placid winter and its noisy summers, its waters have witnessed many maritime catastrophes.

The author, Jorge Bañón, leaves us a catalog of 26 ships with well-known names and countless more of unknown affiliation, whose tragic end is narrated in the pages of the book. The reader will witness the sinking of Phoenician, Roman or Berber pirate ships. We will also get to know the emigration ships, loaded with passengers, who made their last voyage in these waters.

A little big book that is worth to read it.

Algo va mal con la jardinería en Hacienda Riquelme (3) / Something is wrong with Hacienda Riquelme gardening (3)

En mayo de 2014 publicamos la entrada Nuestros árboles que incluía un buen número de fotos. Las siete últimas mostraban el lamentable estado de los árboles en torno a un edificio de la fase 1.

En agosto de 2021, las fotos incluidas en esta entrada se tomaron en el mismo lugar.

La situación no solo no ha mejorado en siete años, sino que en la actualidad hay menos árboles que a finales de 2007, cuando se entregaron los apartamentos. Además, el desarrollo de la mayoría de los ejemplares que sobreviven es muy pobre.

Este problema se da solo en algunas partes del resort. Todos los propietarios pagan por los mismos servicios, pero no todos los reciben.

Durante todo este tiempo, nuestro Comité ha ignorado siempre las reclamaciones efectuadas.

En cambio, actuando como sparring de los responsables del resort, la empresa encargada de la jardinería ha dedicado tiempo para dar múltiples disculpas y diferentes explicaciones cada vez:

• Que si la tierra no es buena porque es arcillosa.
• Que si solo tiene poco más de un metro de profundidad.
• Que si los árboles (plantados por la misma empresa de jardinería) no son de la especie adecuada.
• Que si reponen árboles, los propietarios tienen que pagarlos y ¡regarlos ellos mismos!.
• Que si no arraigan, la compañía no se responsabiliza de nada.
• Que no hay presupuesto para reponer ni para abonar tierra.
• Que no hay agua.
• Que...

¡Qué mala suerte, todos los problemas del mundo, pero ninguna solución! Nos preguntamos si no se debería dejar de pagar por un servicio que no se recibe.

Mientras tanto, a los jardineros les ordenan dedicarse a podar todo lo que crezca en el resort y dejar a los árboles con copa esférica, pero no a resolver ningún problema.

No tiene sentido que personas cuya gestión ha sido siempre fuertemente criticada lleven más de 8 años en el cargo. Es hora de que vuelvan a su casa, descansen y nos dejen descansar a los demás.

In May 2014 we published the post Our Trees including several photos. The last seven showed the very poor development of the trees around a building of phase 1.

In August 2021, the photos included in this post were taken in the same place.

The situation has not improved in seven years, even worse there are now fewer trees than at the end of 2007, when the apartments were handed over. Furthermore, the development of most of the surviving specimens is very poor.

This problem only occurs in some parts of the resort. All owners pay for the same services, but not all receive them.

During all this time, our Board have always ignored the complaints they received.

Instead, acting as sparring for those in charge of the resort, the gardening company has dedicated time to give multiple apologies and different explanations each time:

• The earth is not good because it is clayey.
• The earth is only a bit more than a meter deep.
• The trees (planted by same gardening company) are not the adequate species.
• Trees can be replaced, but the owners must pay for and water them.
• The company is not responsible for anything if the planted trees don't root.
• There is no budget to replace or feed the ground.
• There is no water.
• ...

What a bad luck, all the problems in the world but no solution! We wonder if we should stop paying for a service that in practice is not provided.

Meanwhile, gardeners are ordered to prune whatever grows in the resort and leaving the trees with spherical crown, but not to solve any problem.

It doesn't make sense that people whose management has always been strongly criticized remain in office after at least 8 years. It is time for them to go home, rest and let all of us rest also.

Las aves en Hacienda Riquelme a través de los años / Birds in Hacienda Riquelme through the years

Desde el principio, Hacienda Riquelme se ha caracterizado por la presencia de muchas especies de aves. Los lagos contribuyen en gran medida a ello. En los últimos años, la variedad de especies que nos visitan en diferentes épocas de año parece haber disminuido. Aún así, la observación de aves sigue siendo un atractivo más del resort.

Since the beginning, Hacienda Riquelme has been characterized by the presence of many species of birds. Lakes contribute greatly to this. In recent years, variety of species that visit us at different seasons seems to have decreased. Still birdwatching remains an extra attraction of the resort.

Una bandada de porrones europeos en el resort / A flock of European Pochard in the resort

Esta mañana tuvimos la grata sorpresa de ver un número inusualmente alto de porrones europeos en el lago situado entre las fases 1 y 2. Había más de 40, y también los residentes habituales, pochas, gallinetas y zampullines. Hacía mucho que no observábamos algo así. Un espectáculo digno de apreciar y difrutar.

This morning we were pleasantly surprised by an unusually high number of European Pochards in the lake between phases 1 and 2. There were more than 40, and also the usual residents, Coots, Moorhens and Little Grebes. It's  a long time since we watched something like this. Worthwile appreciating and enjoying.

Gestionar Hacienda Riquelme requiere mucho trabajo y responsabilidad. Un presupuesto anual de más de 3.000.000 € y 1864 apartamentos dan fe de ello. Es normal que no todo el mundo esté de acuerdo con todas las decisiones que se toman.

Pero lo que no es normal es que, ante críticas y sugerencias, la reacción de los responsables sea censurar los comentarios de propietarios en las redes sociales e ignorar sistemáticamente cualquier discrepancia.

Los que invirtieron sus ahorros en el resort quieren lo mejor para él. Por eso creemos necesario denunciar las decisiones erróneas, en algún caso disparatadas.

El pasado 20 de diciembre publicamos la entrada Algo va mal con la jardinería en Hacienda Riquelme en la que se criticaba la poda de olivos realizada y también otros aspectos de la jardinería.

Que se necesita reducir el consumo de agua, es algo que hemos dicho en este blog muchas veces desde 2010. Como ejemplo puede ver las siguientes entradas:

Uno de los criterios que más ayudan a la reducción de ese consumo es el ajardinamiento con plantas autóctonas. Lo sabíamos y así nos lo han confirmado socios de ANSE (Asociación de Naturalistas del Sudeste). Esto es algo que en Hacienda Riquelme apenas se tiene en cuenta.

Tampoco se tiene en cuenta que este resort está en Murcia y no debe ajardinarse al estilo inglés, francés, u otros muy diferentes del original. Managing Hacienda Riquelme requires a lot of work and responsibility. An annual budget of more than €3,000,000 and 1,864 apartments are proof of this. It is normal that not everyone agrees with all the decisions taken.

But what is not normal is that, in the face of criticism and suggestions, the reaction of those responsible is censorship of comments by owners on social media and the systematic ignoring of any discrepancy.

Those who invested their savings in the resort want the best for it. That is why we believe it is necessary to report wrong, and in some cases crazy decisions.

Last December 20, we published the post Something is wrong with Hacienda Riquelme gardening in which the olive tree pruning and also other aspects of gardening that had been carried out were criticized.

One of the criteria that helps most in reducing this consumption is landscaping with native plants. We knew it and it has also been confirmed by members of ANSE (Association of Southeast Naturalists). This kind of landscaping is something hardly done in Hacienda Riquelme.

It is also not taken into account that this resort is in Murcia and should not be landscaped in English, French, or any other style that is very different from the original. Hay quiénes todavía no se han enterado de que los cipreses son los árboles típicos de los cementerios españoles. Si se quiere ajardinar y ahorrar agua, mejor buscar otras soluciones. Por favor, no hagan más el ridículo ni malgasten las cuotas de la comunidad. / There are those who still have not realised that cypresses are the typical trees of Spanish cemeteries. If you want to do gardening and save water, it is better to find other solutions. Please don't make either a fool of yourself or waste the community fees.

Un cormorán en el lago grande / A cormorant in the big lake

El cormorán es un visitante invernal del resort. A lo largo de los años le hemos dedicado varias entradas y publicado diversas fotos, algunas de ellas espectaculares. En 2021, de momento, solo hemos visto el solitario ejemplar de la siguiente foto.

The cormorant is a winter visitor to the resort. Over the years we have dedicated several posts to it and published various pictures, some of them impressive. In 2021, at the moment, we have only watched the solitary specimen in the photo below.
