Why have we criticized the resort's gardening policy? / ¿Por qué hemos criticado la política de jardinería del resort?

Not long ago, someone asked us why we were so critical on former Board's landscaping management. Reasons are explained in posts published in this blog since December 2021. Previously, criticisms and suggestions had been made privately. But finally, we had no choice but to expose here the complaints of the owners harmed by the management decisions.

No hace mucho, nos preguntaron por qué éramos tan críticos con la gestión del paisajismo del anterior Comité. Las razones están explicadas en entradas publicadas en este blog a partir de diciembre de 2021. Hasta entonces, las críticas y sugerencias se habían hecho en privado. Finalmente no nos quedó otra opción que exponer aquí las quejas de los propietarios perjudicados por esa gestión.

La obsesión por el césped / Lawn obsession

On October 9, the newspaper El Mundo published the article What the obsession with lawn says about Spain. If you are not a subscriber to El Mundo you can read it by enlarging or downloading the images below.

The article is illustrated with a photo of Hyde Park in August 2022. It criticizes the use of lawn in the most arid country in Europe and with a historic structural water deficit. He also says that intensive agriculture consumes 84% of the available water. Some tips and solutions are proposed:

• Use more resilient native ground-covers (perennial shrubs and herbaceous species: lavender, rosemary, sage...) and try xeriscaping (gardening with low water consumption and without chemicals).
• Get rid of the cliché of the Anglo-Saxon garden and bet on another for more dry land, which is the one that corresponds to us. Borriquero thistle and weeds are life-giving elements.
• The Real Club Valderrama Golf has replaced part of the grass with mulch or crushed cork oak bark, and the PGA Catalunya Golf has been transformed into a nature reserve.
• There are gardens without lawns, generally with a clear Hispano-Arab influence.
• If lawn mowing is spaced out, there is a significant increase in fauna, in particular pollinating insects, which are experiencing a major crisis. As the number of insects decreases, so does the number of birds that feed on them.

El pasado 9 de octubre, el diario El Mundo publicó el articulo Lo que la obsesión por el césped dice de España. Si usted no es suscriptor de El Mundo puede leerlo ampliando o descargando las imágenes siguientes.

El artículo viene ilustrado con una foto de Hyde Park en agosto de 2022. Critica el uso del césped en el país más árido de Europa y con un histórico déficit estructural de agua. También dice que la agricultura intensiva consume un 84% el agua disponible. Se dan algunos consejos y soluciones:

• Usar tapizantes autóctonos más resilientes (especies arbustivas y herbáceas perennes: lavanda, romero, salvia...) y probar con la xerojardinería, la jardinería de bajo consumo de agua y sin químicos.
• Quitarnos de encima el tópico del jardín anglosajón y apostar por otro más de secano, que es el que nos corresponde. El cardo borriquero y las malas hierbas son elementos vivificadores.
• El Real Club Valderrama Golf ha sustituido parte del césped por mulch o corteza de alcornoque machacada, y el PGA Catalunya Golf ha sido transformado en reserva natural.
• Existen jardines sin césped, en general de clara influencia hispanoárabe.
• Si se espacian las siegas del césped, se produce un importante incremento de la fauna, en particular de los insectos polinizadores, que están viviendo una crisis importantísima. Al disminuir el número de insectos también lo hace el de los pájaros que se alimentan de ellos.

Gardens and birds in Hacienda Riquelme / Jardines y aves en Hacienda Riquelme

For many years we have studied and enjoyed the ornithological wealth of this resort. But that wealth belongs to past times. The variety of bird species seen at Hacienda Riquelme has plummeted. With the decrease of plant species, the pruning of flowering plants, frequent and massive fumigations, the elimination of wild areas and the introduction of plastic and stone areas, the decline of bird and insect species was inevitable and reflects the environmental damage caused by the ongoing awful management of gardening.

Below you can see the 84 species of birds identified at Hacienda Riquelme up to November 2015 by our neighbour and naturalist John Girdley. How many can be seen now?

Durante muchos años hemos estudiado y disfrutado de la riqueza ornitológica de este resort. Pero esa riqueza pertenece a tiempos pasados. La variedad de aves vistas en Hacienda Riquelme se ha desplomado. Con la disminución de especies de plantas, la poda de plantas con flores, fumigaciones frecuentes y masivas, la eliminación de áreas silvestres y la introducción de zonas de plástico y piedra, también la disminución de especies de aves e insectos ha sido inevitable y refleja el daño ambiental causado por la continuada mala gestión de la jardinería.

Water scarcity is not a new problem at Hacienda Riquelme. For years this blog has presented solutions that have never been considered. Unfortunately, several members of the Committee have staunchly supported proposals that we consider to be preposterous and harmful. Their resignations are very welcome and long overdue, as their replacements on the Committee can help move Hacienda Riquelme forward to a better, more sustainable future.

An example of an alternative solution to the stone field that some like so much was published in June 2013! You can see it in the post Xerogardening, an aesthetic solution to low water.

La escasez de agua no es un problema nuevo en Hacienda Riquelme. Durante años este blog ha presentado soluciones que nunca han sido tenidas en cuenta. Desafortunadamente, varios miembros del Comité han apoyado incondicionalmente propuestas que consideramos disparatadas y dañinas. Sus dimisiones son muy bienvenidas y esperadas desde hace mucho tiempo, ya que sus sustitutos en el Comité pueden ayudar a que Hacienda Riquelme avance hacia un futuro mejor y más sostenible.
