Ranking de empresas de la Región de Murcia / Ranking of companies in Region of Murcia

The online economic newspaper MurciaEconomía.com has published a ranking with the 2,500 largest companies in the Region of Murcia, in terms of turnover.

The list is based on the latest annual accounts submitted by each company to the Registro Mercantil (Commercial Registry), usually filed during 2011 and containing the data for the previous year.

POLARIS DESARROLLO SL is 12th and POLARIS WORLD REAL ESTATE 32nd, but their sales figures are from 2009, not 2010.

In general, we can say that the 'big' firms in the region have resisted the onslaught of the crisis. Construction companies and ancillary firms are the exception. Business volumes have halved in most cases.

Agricultural and food companies have presented accounts similar to the ones for the previous year, thanks to exports. They have had to sell more products to keep revenues steady owing to the general fall in prices.

Full article and ranking available here.

P.S. Tip: look for information about NEW GOLF PROPERTIES SL in Internet. There seems to be a close relationship with Polaris.

El reino de Teodomiro / The Dark Ages in Murcia. The kingdom of Theodemir

The Visigoths kept the administrative organization inherited from the Romans in Hispania. It was based on the existence of few large provinces. Heading each one there was a Dux (Duke). In the beginning, Dukes were just a sort of military governor. Later on, they became also responsible for civil administration.

Provinces were divided into districts, each headed by a comex (count).

In the late VII century, Sucina belonged to a county that covered what nowadays are Murcia and Alicante provinces plus some surrounding areas. The capital of this territory was Orihuela and the count’s name was Theodemir.

Mozarabic Chronicle of year 754, the main documentary source of this era that has arrived to us, remarked religious, humanitarian and military qualities of Theodemir: "a lover of the Scriptures, admirable eloquence and expert warrior".

This chronic tells also that Theodemir rejected the attack and landing attempt of a Byzantine fleet. This attack is under discussion and some historians believe that it was a trial to evaluate the possibility of invasion of the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs, not by the Byzantines.

In those years, an expanding Islam struggled to dislodge the Byzantines out of North Africa. As almost ever through its more than thousand years of history, the Eastern Romans had a stubborn resistance and numerous counterattacks. Its capital Carthage fell and was definitely destroyed in the year 705. Muslims reached the gates of Spain, like Byzantines themselves had done a century and a half before.

The same story happened again. In the turbulent Visigothic kingdom, the sons of the late king Witiza (702-710) wanted to overthrow the king Roderic (710-711) and asked for help from the followers of Muhammad. The Visigothic army was destroyed and Roderic (or Rodrigo) died in the Guadalete battle. The Muslim army launched a lightning conquest of Hispania. The support of the Jews and the indifference of the Hispano-Roman population facilitated the collapse of a state that had long been in decay.

Theodemir resisted the invaders in his county and managed to sign an advantageous treaty with them. This treaty was in force in seven major cities (Orihuela, Alicante, Elche and Lorca among others). He agreed to pay an annual tribute and not cooperate with the enemies of Muslims. In exchange he could maintain his county semi-independent and keep his religion, laws and land.

In fact, this kind of treaties was frequent. The Muslims managed through them to control new territories by keeping existing power structures. Local aristocracy usually converted to Islam, what did not happen here.

The Treaty of Tudmir, as Theodemir was named by Arabs, listed the agricultural products grown in the area and to be paid as a tribute: cereals (wheat and barley), derived from the vine (grape juice and vinegar), oil and honey.

This treaty kept this land in peace, regardless of the bitter civil wars (fitnas) held by the Muslims, even before their conquest of Hispania were completed. The invaders coming from Arabia, Yemen and Syria were always facing each other, but mostly to North-African Berbers. The bad Islamized Berbers formed the basis of the Islamic armies in the Iberian Peninsula.

It is unclear how long the kingdom of Theodemir survived. We know that it was inherited by his son Athanagild. Some historians believe that around the year 779 the treaty was no longer respected, as a result of support given to an army sent from Syria against Rahman I, the first Emir self-declared independent of Damascus.

The territory became known as the kora (Muslim province) of Tudmir. During the administrative reorganization of the emirate carried out by Rahman II in 825, the capital was moved from Orihuela to the newly founded city of Murcia.

Figure extracted from / Figura extraída de: Wikipedia

Visigodos y bizantinos / The Dark Ages in Murcia. Visigoths and Byzantines

Sucina and its surroundings were inhabited throughout the Neolithic period, 4,000 years ago. This is borne out by excavations at the archaeological sites of the area. Archaeologist Maria Garcia Samper refers in her book "Sucina: Its Archaeology and way of life" to more than thirty sites, some of them located in Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort. Remains evidence the presence of humans even during the Bronze and Iron ages, the Iberian period and Roman and Muslim dominations.

There is only one period for which no remains have been found: from the first barbarian invasions of the Suevi, Vandals and Alans in the Iberian Peninsula in the early V century until the Muslim invasion in the early VIII century. This period is known in Spain as the ‘Alta Edad Media’. It roughly matches to what the English call the Dark Ages.

The absence of remains in Sucina from this era can be partly explained by Vandals and Alans incursions. But it is more surprising taking into account the presence of the Byzantines (the Eastern Roman Empire) that occupied a part of southeastern Spain for about seventy years. Cartagena, named Justina by Byzantines, was the capital of the province Spaniae.

Why did the "Romans" come back to Spain?

In the early VI century the Visigoths were defeated and driven out of Gaul by the Franks. They could prevent its disappearance with the support of their cousins the Ostrogoths, but the center of gravity of their kingdom came to be in the Iberian Peninsula. They were very few in number and in the middle of the century dominated the territory only partially. Their political regime was an elective monarchy, prone to the killing of kings (the "Gothic morbid") and civil conflicts. In the year 551, a nobility faction led by Athanagild rebelled against king Agila. Unable to take the throne, Athanagild sought help from the Byzantines.

A few years before, the Byzantines had destroyed the kingdom founded by Vandals a century earlier in northern Africa. The Vandals had ravaged the Mediterranean shore and their destruction was a pursued target for a long time. So the troops of Emperor Justinian occupied points close to the Visigothic kingdom as Ceuta and the Balearic Islands. The imperial policy at that time was expanding so they decided to support the rebels by sending a fleet with a small army in the year 552.

Byzantine intervention only changed the course of the war in the year 554 when, just after defeating also to the Ostrogothic kingdom of Italy, they were able to send reinforcements to the Peninsula. The Agila supporters murdered their king and delivered the throne to Athanagild. Then the Byzantine allies decided not to be it anymore and stay. Byzantines took over control from Denia (Valencia) to the Guadalete river (Cádiz) supported by Hispanic-Roman inhabitants.

The Visigoths fought against the Byzantines to expel them from the territories they have occupied. The resistance was stubborn and with mixed results. Liuvigild, the most important of the Visigothic kings, organized several campaigns early in his reign (572-586) with limited success. King Sisebut (612-621) was near to throw them out. But it was king Suintila (621-631) who was finally able to conquer Cartagena, the last imperial remnant, in the year 625.

Suintila was the first monarch whose authority extended more or less throughout the Iberian Peninsula and he is considered the first king of full Hispania.

Museo de San Javier / Museum of San Javier

If you drive from Hacienda Riquelme to San Javier along the RM-1, at the first roundabout you find in San Javier, there is a white two-story building. These former Guardia Civil barracks have now been rehabilitated and house the Museum of San Javier.

This museum is actually two in one: the Bethlehem and Ethnographic museums.

The Bethlehem museum displays figures and nativity scenes that are installed every year in a monumental Bethlehem in San Javier. It is a curious blend of art, religion and ethnography.

The ethnographic museum traces the history and daily life of the town, through several rooms. There are rooms devoted to the life and work in agriculture and at sea. The rooms devoted to everyday life show early twentieth century furniture, photos and documents.  Several archeological remains are also on display.

To sum up, it is a recommended visit, easy to do because of its proximity to the resort.

Casa Los Porches

History has not treated every farm in Sucina and its surroundings in the same way. Casón de Riquelme was refurbished and is in use. By contrast, the evocative ruins of Casa Los Porches can be seen by junction 19 of RM-1 highway.

This large building is located on a small hill along a natural path that leads to the coast through the pass of San Pedro, between the Altaona and Escalona sierras.

In past centuries, there was a Roman road linking Orihuela to Cartagena along this path.

The existence of Casa Los Porches has been documented since 1728, when Mr. Juan Carrillo de Albornoz built an inn for travelers who passed by to rest and take refreshment.

Recently, a neighbour of Sucina, Mr. J.A. López Iniesta, has rediscovered three old mines in the vicinity. It’s not sure yet what was mined but they bring to light new aspects of the area's history. More information available at Sucina, yesterday, today and forever.
