Un galápago de Florida / A Florida tortoise

El pasado día 25 de mayo, nuestra vecina Carmen Franco filmó esta tortuga en la fase 1. Según Gemini, la IA de Google, se trata de un galápago de Florida (Trachemys scripta scripta). No es una especie nativa de la Península Ibérica y su presencia en el medio natural se debe a su liberación como mascota.

No sabemos de dónde ha salido este ejemplar, pero da la impresión de que se desenvuelve bastante bien en Hacienda Riquelme.

On 25 May, our neighbour Carmen Franco filmed this turtle in phase 1. According to Gemini, Google's AI, it is a Florida tortoise (Trachemys scripta scripta). It is not a species native to the Iberian Peninsula and its presence in the wild is due to its release as a pet.

We do not know where this specimen came from, but it seems to be doing quite well at Hacienda Riquelme.

Moths at Hacienda Riquelme, indicators of the health of the environment

Moths at Hacienda Riquelme, indicators of the health of the environment, migration and rarities.

I have been recording moths at Hacienda Riquelme since I first bought here 15 years ago. Since I retired this has become a serious study supported and encouraged by Murcia University. The habitat on a second-floor balcony is hardly ideal but provides a snapshot of the wider environment. If STV have been spraying or trees are cut down then, numbers do decrease. Over the years 478 species have been recorded.

Migration.

Most people are aware that some birds fly from Africa every year on an annual migration. Insect migration is less well studied but can happen on an enormous scale. The reasons aren’t so clear but are likely related to food sources, breeding potential and weather in North Africa, especially Algeria in the case of Murcia.

This year has been notable for rare migrants. The quite large Striped Hawkmoth (Hyles livornica) has arrived in very large numbers this year. The author saw 400 in just two traps two weeks ago in Cadiz province, and they have arrived in Murcia too.

These can be indicators of wider movement. The tiny Aproaerema polychromella (3mm) with just one previous record here has been seen in the hundreds.

Similarly the equally rare Euchromious ocellea has turned up in similar large numbers. Eastern Bordered Straw (Heliothis nubigera) and the Levant Blackneck (Tathorhynchus exsiccate) likewise.

All of these have crossed 100’s of kilometres of the Mediterranean Sea to get here.

Rare Breeding Moths.

The Pine Tree Lappet (Dendrolimus pini) lives in the local mature pine forests. As the Pine trees at Hacienda Requelme grow and mature it is being seen regularly.

Cucullia bubaceki and Eilema rungsi are both very rare in a Murcia context. Cucullia bubaceki has just one known breeding colony near the River Mula and Eilema rungsi has just two previous Murcia records. Records of these in both 2024 and 2025 suggest that they are breeding here.

Finally, the stunning Leopard Moth (Zeuzera pyrina) turned up in the first week of May. Could this also be breeding nearby? We await further records.

No es la primera vez que hablamos sobre polillas en este blog y esperamos que esta entrada le resulte interesante (o al menos curiosa). He estado registrando polillas en Hacienda Riquelme desde que compré aquí hace 15 años. Desde que me jubilé se ha convertido en un estudio serio apoyado y fomentado por la Universidad de Murcia. El hábitat en un balcón del segundo piso no es ideal, pero proporciona una instantánea del entorno más amplio. Si se ha fumigado o se han talado árboles, el número de ejemplares disminuye. A lo largo de los años se han registrado 478 especies.

Migración.

La mayoría de la gente sabe que algunas aves vuelan desde África cada año en una migración anual. La migración de insectos está menos estudiada, pero puede producirse a gran escala. Las razones no están tan claras, pero probablemente estén relacionadas con las fuentes de alimento, el potencial de cría y el clima en el norte de África, especialmente Argelia en el caso de Murcia.

Este año ha sido notable en cuanto a especies migratorias poco comunes. La polilla rayada (Hyles livornica), bastante grande, ha llegado en grandes cantidades este año. El autor vio 400 en sólo dos trampas hace dos semanas en la provincia de Cádiz, y también han llegado a Murcia.

Pueden ser indicadores de un movimiento más amplio. La pequeña Aproaerema polychromella (3mm) con un solo registro previo aquí se ha visto por centenares.

Del mismo modo, la también rara Euchromious ocellea ha aparecido en cantidades similares, igual que la Heliothis nubigera y la cuello negro de Levante (Tathorhynchus exsiccate).

Todas ellas han atravesado cientos de kilómetros del Mediterráneo para llegar hasta aquí.

Polillas reproductoras raras.

La lapa del Pino (Dendrolimus pini) vive en los bosques de pinos maduros locales. A medida que los pinos en Hacienda Requelme crecen y maduran se está viendo con regularidad.

La Cucullia bubaceki y la Eilema rungsi son ambas muy raras en el contexto de Murcia. Cucullia bubaceki sólo tiene una colonia reproductora conocida cerca del río Mula y Eilema rungsi sólo tiene dos registros previos en Murcia. Los registros de estos en 2024 y 2025 sugieren que se están reproduciendo aquí.

Finalmente, la impresionante polilla leopardo (Zeuzera pyrina) apareció en la primera semana de mayo ¿Podría estar reproduciéndose cerca de aquí? Esperamos nuevos registros.

Neighbourhood Association of Hacienda Riquelme “Los Estorninos”

The Neighbourhood Association “Los Estorninos”, which we have already talked about in previous posts, has issued the following communiqué explaining what it is and what its objectives are:

The Neighborhood Association "Los Estorninos" is a non-profit organization, independent of any political or social group. It is formed by a group of people who have voluntarily joined together to defend and watch over the conservation of the Hacienda Riquelme Resort.

The way it was designed, with many green areas and low building density; the enclave between three areas of special protection for birds, the presence of five lakes and the abundance of native flora have contributed since its creation to make it an important enclave of natural life, refuge and habitat of numerous animal species for whose survival we would be responsible if we allow the enclave to degrade. The care and implementation of vegetation in the Resort will contribute to the decrease of environmental CO2. The ample vegetation covers together with the shadows of the trees will ostensibly lower the temperatures in an area where it is increasingly common to suffer episodes of temperatures that exceed 40ºC.

Living in this natural environment is a privilege that we want to preserve so that current and future residents can continue to enjoy this paradise. This is our contribution to the fight against climate change.

We aspire to achieve a management of the Resort that respects the original design. A management in which there is no room for outside interests or incompetent decisions.

We also intend to bring neighbors closer together, carrying out recreational and socio-cultural activities. The linguistic diversity and the seasonality of many residents will not be impediments to develop these activities.

We will also try to convey the needs of our neighbours to the public and private authorities, bringing to the attention of the competent body the problems that require a solution from that authority.

This Association was constituted on February 11, 2023 and is registered in the Register of Associations of the Region of Murcia with the registration number 202390000164679 and NIF G44801108.

The greater the number of members, the greater the strength and representation capacity of the Association.

Asociación de vecinos de Hacienda Riquelme "Los Estorninos"

La Asociación de vecinos Los Estorninos, de la que ya hemos hablado en entradas anteriores, ha hecho público el siguiente comunicado en el que explica qué es y cuáles son sus objetivos:

La Asociación de vecinos "Los Estorninos" es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro, independiente de cualquier tipo de grupo político o social. Está formada por un grupo de personas que se han unido voluntariamente para defender y velar por la conservación del Resort de Hacienda Riquelme.

El modo en que fue diseñado, con muchas zonas verdes y poca densidad de edificación; el enclave entre tres zonas de especial protección para las aves, la presencia de cinco lagos y la abundancia de flora autóctona han contribuido desde su creación a convertirlo en un importante enclave de vida natural, refugio y hábitat de numerosas especies animales de cuya supervivencia seríamos responsables si permitimos que el enclave se degrade. El cuidado y la implementación de la vegetación en el Resort contribuirán al descenso de CO2 ambiental. Las amplias cubiertas vegetales junto a las sombras de los árboles disminuirán ostensiblemente las temperaturas en una zona donde cada vez es más habitual sufrir episodios de temperaturas que superan los 40ºC.

Vivir en este entorno natural es un privilegio que queremos conservar para que los residentes actuales y futuros puedan seguir disfrutando de este paraíso. Este es nuestro granito de arena en la lucha contra el cambio climático.

Aspiramos a conseguir una gestión del Resort respetuosa con el diseño original. Una gestión en la que no tengan cabida intereses ajenos o decisiones incompetentes.

Pretendemos también que haya un mayor acercamiento entre los vecinos, llevando a cabo actividades lúdicas y socio-culturales. La diversidad lingüística y la estacionalidad de muchos residentes no serán impedimentos para desarrollar estas actividades.

Y además intentaremos ser transmisores de las necesidades de los vecinos ante las autoridades públicas y privadas, poniendo en conocimiento de la entidad competente los problemas que requieran solución por parte de dicha autoridad.

Esta Asociación se constituyó el 11 de Febrero de 2023 y está inscrita en el Registro de Asociaciones de la Región de Murcia con el número de registro 202390000164679 y NIF G44801108.

Cuanto mayor sea el número de socios mayor fuerza y capacidad de representación tendrá la Asociación.
