Lakes and biodiversity in Hacienda Riquelme / Lagos y biodiversidad en Hacienda Riquelme

A healthy bird and wildlife population is indicative of a healthy environment.

During the last year, there have been far fewer birds on the ponds than ever before – this is not a good sign.

The numbers of Squacco Herons / Egrets / Gull-billed Terns / Black-winged Stilts were all down. Additionally, there was little evidence of passage birds dropping in, as they have before, and then staying for a few days. This indicates a lack of available food sources. Worse still, we found several dead Coots on the big lake in August (Toxic algae???).

Water levels have fallen to worryingly low levels since the summer. Most of the reeds were out the water completely and therefore dying.

If the water stops flowing, the pond life will quickly use up the available oxygen and will die if it drops blow a critical level. This happened at the end of August when many big dead fish appeared in the pond located between phases 1 and 2.

The problem is compounded by several factors:
  • Organisms that die then decompose, further exhausting the oxygen.
  • Dead organisms breakdown to provide excess nutrients in the water, this in turn causes algal blooms, clearly visible as a green slime on the water surface.
  • Algae on the surface will block light to any healthy plants below, stopping them photosynthesizing and thus stopping them producing any more oxygen. They in turn will die. Some (not all) algal blooms can be toxic to other wildlife (including humans).
  • Excess evaporation of the remaining water, further concentrates the nutrients in the water, thus exacerbating the problem (this happened all summer 2012).
  • If the reeds die, the nutrients that they have taken from the water and stored within their own biomass over the years, will be washed directly back into the water with the next rains. This could trigger another algal bloom.
Conversely, if water is flowing between the ponds, then the water will remain oxygenated and therefore pond life and bird life will survive.

The golf course need restore the water-levels and circulation to the standards originally set. If they act in a timely fashion, I doubt further remedial action will be needed (e.g. to provide additional oxygenation with simple fountains or blowing air through, and possibly dredging silt from the ponds to remove excess nutrients).

If they do restore the water-levels, by next year the wildlife will have restored itself, in exactly the same way that it originally colonized the place.

Give them their due, Polaris World created an excellent blank canvas for wildlife. We need the present owners to maintain acceptable standards.

It is in the interests of all, golfers, residents and nature lovers that our resort remains healthy.

The golf course company needs to maintain its reputation and we need to continue to attract a premium clientele to our resort.
