Realidades contra la Leyenda Negra / True facts against the Black Legend

España, una gran nación que tiene una Leyenda Negra repleta de falsedades injuriosas.

Sin embargo, la Historia es la que fue, no la que escribieron en el siglo XVI naciones como Inglaterra, Francia u Holanda, por entonces rivales de España.

Por fortuna, hay un interés creciente por recuperar esa Historia, desmontando tópicos negrolegendarios y sacando a la luz la realidad de los hechos.

Con ese objetivo, el doctor en Historia Alfredo Vílchez ha publicado el libro digital Realidades contra la Leyenda Negra.

Se trata de una obra que ilustra y contribuye a rebatir de forma clara, amena y rigurosa los principales conceptos de la citada leyenda. Además, es exhaustivo y habla de muchos más aspectos que los tan manidos de la Inquisición y los conquistadores.

Los numerosos esquemas e ilustraciones del libro son el resultado de años de trabajo que han convertido a Alfredo en un gran experto. Su larga experiencia docente ha sido clave para elaborar una obra muy fácil de leer y de consultar.

Spain, a great nation that has a Black Legend full of injurious falsehoods.

However, History is what it was, not what nations like England, France or Holland wrote in the 16th century, rivals of Spain in that time.

Fortunately, there is a growing interest in recovering that History, by dismantling Black Legend clichés and showing the true facts.

With this target, Alfredo Vílchez, PhD in History, has published the digital book Realidades contra la Leyenda Negra (True facts against the Black Legend).

El submarino Peral / The submarine Peral

Javier Sanmateo es bisnieto de Isaac Peral. Es también el autor de la mejor biografía sobre su bisabuelo escrita hasta la fecha. Como ya comentamos en la entrada 125 aniversario del sumarino Peral, Isaac Peral diseñó y construyó el primer auténtico submarino torpedero, como se le denominó en su día.

El libro escrito por Javier es mucho más que una biografía. Tras un arduo trabajo de investigación en archivos, recoge además las tramas de espionaje, los intereses comerciales y geopolíticos, las actuaciones de distintos grupos de presión y otros muchos factores que afectaron a un invento que las demás potencias tardaron muchos años en tener.

Javier Sanmateo is Isaac Peral's great-grandson. He is also the author of the best biography of his great-grandfather written to date. As we already mentioned in the post for 125th anniversary of the Peral submarine, Isaac Peral designed and built the first authentic torpedo launcher submarine, as it was called in its day.

Javier's book is much more than a biography. After an in deep archive investigation, it also collects espionage plots, commercial and geopolitical interests, actions of different pressure groups and many more factors that affected an invention that other world powers took many years to have.

 

Javier ha tenido la amabilidad de permitirnos usar en este blog dos vídeos con espectaculares infografías acerca de cómo se construyó y cómo era por dentro el submarino Peral. Los realizó el infografista Juan C. Sánchez para el periódico digital El Mundo, con el asesoramiento de Juan I. Chacón y del propio Javier. Probablemente nunca antes había visto el submarino como en estos vídeos. Le sorprenderán.

Javier has kindly allowed us to use in this blog two videos with spectacular infographics about how the Peral submarine was built and how it was like inside. They were made by the infographer Juan C. Sánchez for the on line newspaper El Mundo, with the advice of Juan I. Chacón and Javier himself. Probably, you have never seen before the submarine as in these videos. 5º centenario de la entrada en el Pacífico de la expedición Magallanes-Elcano / 5th centenary of the entry into the Pacific of the Magallanes-Elcano expedition

El 18 de noviembre de 1520, tras encontrar el hoy conocido como estrecho de Magallanes, los tres buques que quedaban de la expedición Magallanes-Elcano (uno había naufragado y otro había vuelto a España) entraron en el océano Pacífico.

Como en 1520 se usaba el calendario juliano, ese 18 de noviembre se corresponde con el 28 del mismo mes en el calendario gregoriano, el que usamos actualmente. Por eso, este 5º centenario se conmemora el 28 de noviembre.

La expedición Magallanes-Elcano completó en 1522 la primera circunnavegación. Se trata de uno de los viajes más importantes de la Historia porque permitió conocer algo mejor las verdaderas dimensiones de la Tierra y demostró empíricamente su redondez.

On November 18, 1520, after finding what nowaday is known as the Strait of Magellan, the three remaining ships of the Magallanes-Elcano expedition (one had been shipwrecked and other had returned to Spain) went into the Pacific Ocean.

As the Julian calendar was used in 1520, that November 18 corresponds to the 28 of the same month in the Gregorian calendar, the one we use today. That is why this 5th centenary is commemorated on November 28.

The Magellan-Elcano expedition completed the first circumnavigation in 1522. It is one of the most important journeys in history for allowing us to know something better the real dimension of Earth and for demonstrating its roundness empirically.

En la entrada La Gran Armada desmitificada dábamos a entender que la Historia de España poco tiene que ver con la que ha difundido la leyenda negra. Esta leyenda es resultado de la eficaz propaganda en siglos pasados de los enemigos de nuestro país, en especial Inglaterra. Por fortuna, en la actualidad hay mucha gente esforzándose en desmontar esa leyenda y reivindicar las grandes aportaciones de España a la humanidad.

In the post The Spanish Armada demystified, we implied that the History of Spain has little to do with what the black legend has spread. This legend is the result of the effective propaganda in past centuries of the enemies of our country, mainly England. Luckily, today there are many people striving to dismantle that legend and vindicate Spain's great contributions to the mankind.

La Gran Armada desmitificada / The Spanish Armada demystified

En la entrada BBC FOUR y la verdadera historia de la Gran Armada hablamos de un documental desmitificador. Lo encontramos completo en YouTube pero desfortunadamente ya no está disponible.

Pero lo que sí hemos encontrado es otro documental relacionado con el anterior y titulado Náufragos de la Gran Armada en Irlanda, disponible en el canal Hijos Bonicos. Lo insertamos también (algunas entrevistas están en inglés con subtítulos en español).

In the post BBC FOUR and the true history of the Spanish Armada, we talk about a demystifying documentary. We found it complete in YouTube but unfortunately it is not available anymore.

But what we have do found is another documentary related to the previous one and entitled Náufragos de la Gran Armada en Irlanda (Shipwrecked of the Great Armada in Ireland), available in the Hijos Bonicos channel. We also insert it so you can watch it ... if you understand Spanish (some interviews are in English with Spanish subtitles).

Sierra Espuña, Naturaleza y Cultura

En enero de 2019, la Comunidad Autónoma de la Región de Murcia publicó el libro Sierra Espuña, Naturaleza y Cultura. Es una completísima obra de casi 800 páginas en la que han participado 130 especialistas y 80 fotógrafos. Puede encontrar una reseña del libro y descargárselo gratuítamente aquí.

También se puede descargar por capítulos o en un único pdf desde este enlace.

In January 2019, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia published the book Sierra Espuña, Naturaleza y Cultura. It is a very complete work of almost 800 pages in which 130 specialists and 80 photographers have participated. You can find a review of the book and download it for free here.

Un ibis sagrado cerca de Hacienda Riquelme / A sacred ibis near Hacienda Riquelme

Susana, la veterinaria de Sucina (Centro Veterinario Petlovers), nos ha enviado esta foto de un ibis sagrado, que fue tomada cerca de Hacienda Riquelme.

El ibis sagrado es una ave muy rara en España. En la Guía de Aves de España de la Sociedad Española de Ornitología (SEO BirdLife) dicen que en España se han observado apenas unas 20 parejas entre 1994 y 2004, aunque esta especie está en claro aumento.

John Girdley, nuestro vecino, entomólogo y ornitólogo, cree que también podría ser un ejemplar escapado de cautividad o un ave vagabunda en España.

Susana, Sucina's vet (Petlovers Veterinary Center), has sent us this photo of a sacred ibis, that was taken near Hacienda Riquelme.

The sacred ibis is a very rare bird in Spain. In the Bird Guide of Spain of the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO BirdLife) they say that in Spain only about 20 pairs have been recorded between 1994 and 2004, although this species is clearly increasing.

John Girdley, our neighbor, entomologist and ornithologist, believes that it could also be a specimen escaped from captivity or a vagrant bird in Spain.
