Turismo e historia militar en Cartagena / Tourism and Military History in Cartagena

Cartagena was founded by the Carthaginians around the year 227 BC. It has good characteristics as a natural harbour easy to defend and has played a main role in major war events throughout its history. We have written about some of them in previous posts (see The Dark Ages in Murcia. Visigoths and Byzantines and Crisis and Revolution. The Cantonal Insurrection of Cartagena).

The remains of many fortifications built on its surroundings are an important historical testimony of the evolution of military defensive architecture.

The AFORCA association gathers lots of information in its website, including many pictures, what makes easier to know the places of interest related to the military history of Cartagena. Often, these places offer great landscape value (as The batteries of Cabo Tiñoso).

The maps below, courtesy of AFORCA, show the location of the fortifications, coastal batteries and other military strongholds of Cartagena and surroundings. If you want to visit them, these maps and the quoted website are a good starting point.
