Growing plants that will stay alive when you are away from your apartment / Cultivando plantas que sobreviven cuando usted está lejos de su apartamento

I love gardening but I wasn’t sure if I could keep plants alive when I am only able to visit three times a year. (April / August / October). My plants needed to survive up to six months without me watering them.

Me encanta la jardinería pero no estaba seguro si podría mantener plantas vivas visitando el apartamento sólo tres veces al año (abril / agosto / octubre).  Mis plantas necesitaban sobrevivir hasta seis meses sin que las riegue.

In Summer 2009, I filled my window boxes with a mixture of Cacti and Succulents. The soil layer is very important  (see diagram and notes). I bought all these at the Polaris World Garden Centre and at a place called “Su Garden” which is on the old road down to San Javier.

En el verano de 2009, llené las jardineras de las ventanas con una mezcla de plantas cactáceas y suculentas. La tierra empleada es muy importante (ver el diagrama y las notas). Compré todo en Polaris World Garden Center y en un sitio llamado “Su Garden” que está en la antigua carretera hacia San Javier.

The plants cost about €30.00 and the compost about €100.00 to fill the big window boxes.

Las plantas costaron alrededor de 30 € y el compost para rellenar las grandes jardineras de las ventanas unos 100 €.

In October 2009, the plants were still alive and so I planted up two large (and deep) plant pots on my other Patio (this is open to the sky and so does get any rain that falls.) When I am present I soak the compost every day.

En octubre de 2009, las plantas estaban vivas así que planté dos grandes (y profundas) macetas en mi otra terraza. Esta terraza es como un patio abierto al cielo de forma que las plantas obtienen el agua de la lluvia. Cuando estoy allí riego abundantemente a diario el compost.

All the plants are still alive and thriving today.

A día de hoy las plantas siguen vivas y florecientes.

These must be drought tolerant Cacti or Succulents.

Porous Volcanic Stones “Aridos” to act as a mulch. These reduce water loss on hot days. They also allow water to condense from the air on cooler nights.

Piedras volcánicas porosas "áridos" que actúan como abono. Además reducen la pérdida de agua en días calurosos. También permiten que la humedad del aire se condense en las noches más frescas.

Well drained Cactus Compost so that roots are not sitting in water.
