Un galápago de Florida / A Florida tortoise

El pasado día 25 de mayo, nuestra vecina Carmen Franco filmó esta tortuga en la fase 1. Según Gemini, la IA de Google, se trata de un galápago de Florida (Trachemys scripta scripta). No es una especie nativa de la Península Ibérica y su presencia en el medio natural se debe a su liberación como mascota.

No sabemos de dónde ha salido este ejemplar, pero da la impresión de que se desenvuelve bastante bien en Hacienda Riquelme.

On 25 May, our neighbour Carmen Franco filmed this turtle in phase 1. According to Gemini, Google's AI, it is a Florida tortoise (Trachemys scripta scripta). It is not a species native to the Iberian Peninsula and its presence in the wild is due to its release as a pet.

We do not know where this specimen came from, but it seems to be doing quite well at Hacienda Riquelme.

El lince ibérico es el felino más amenazado del planeta. Y sin duda uno de los más bellos. El pasado 17 de febrero, el consejero de Medio Ambiente, Mar Menor, Universidades e Investigación del Gobierno de Murcia presentó un precioso vídeo promocional (2'37") sobre la inminente reintroducción del lince ibérico en las pedanías altas de Lorca. Una gran noticia para Murcia y el medioambiente. Lo insertamos a continuación.

The Iberian lynx is the most endangered feline on the planet. And certainly one of the most beautiful. On past February 17, the consejero de Medio Ambiente, Mar Menor, Universidades e Investigación (Minister of the Environment, Mar Menor, Universities and Research) of the Government of Murcia presented a very nice promotional video (2'37") about the imminent reintroduction of the Iberian lynx in the upper districts of Lorca. Great news for Murcia and the environment. We insert it below.

¿Por qué matar las flores silvestres? / Why kill wild flowers?

El 15 de abril, publicamos la entrada Flores silvestres después de las lluvias. El día 18, la entrada Uso masivo de herbicidas. Nos temíamos lo peor y, solo un día después, esos temores se han convertido en realidad.

La tercera foto muestra cómo quedan amarillas las suelas de unos zapatos tras pisar tierra sobre la que se aplicó herbicida. La cuarta es de unas flores que han escapado a la destrucción masiva llevada a cabo por la empresa de jardineria. Amplíe cualquier foto haciendo clic en ella.

Nos preguntamos quién, cómo y por qué gestiona así la jardinería del resort.

On April 15, we published the post Wild flowers after the rains. On April 18t, the post Massive use of herbicides. We feared the worst and, just one day later, those fears have become reality.

The third photo shows how the soles of some shoes look yellow after stepping on earth with herbicide applied. The fourth is about some flowers that have escaped the massive destruction carried out by the gardening company. Enlarge any pic by clicking on it.

We wonder who, how and why manages the gardening of the resort in this way.

Uso masivo de herbicidas / Massive use of herbicides

En nuestra entrada anterior informábamos del uso de herbicidas también en zonas silvestres del resort. Hoy nos han confirmado que los jardineros tienen órdenes de aplicar herbicidas en TODO EL RESORT, incluyendo las zonas propiedad del Ayuntamiento y las zonas cubiertas de piedras.

Nos dejan sin flores silvestres, sin insectos, sin aves, sin vida. Este no es el resort que queremos

In our previous post we reported on the use of herbicides also in wild areas of the resort. Today we have been confirmed that the gardeners have orders to apply herbicides throughout THE FULL RESORT, including the areas owned by the City Council and the areas covered with stones.

They leave us without wild flowers, without insects, without birds, without life. This is not the resort we want.

Flores silvestres después de las lluvias / Wild flowers after the rains

Durante varias semanas ha llovido en Hacienda Riquelme casi a diario. Con el agua y el sol  se ha producido una eclosión de flores silvestres de vivos colores.

For several weeks it has rained over Hacienda Riquelme almost daily. With water and sun there has been an outbreak of brightly colored wild flowers.

Lo que no entendemos es por qué en algunos casos se han segado las flores silvestres y en otros se han aplicado herbicidas. Tampoco entendemos que a un lado de la valla perimetral el campo está verde, aunque no esté cultivado, mientras que en el lado de Hacienda Riquelme hay amplios espacios sin vida ¿Algún gestor de Hacienda Riquelme odia la vida silvestre?

What we don't understand is why in some cases wild flowers have been mowed and in others herbicides have been applied. We don't understand either that at a side of the perimeter fence the field is green, although it is not cultivated, while on the Hacienda Riquelme side there are wide spaces without life. Does any manager of Hacienda Riquelme hate wildlife?

Un gavilán comiendo un estornino / A Sparrowhawk eating a Spotless Starling

Esta vez fue nuestro vecino Mario quién nos envió un vídeo (37") sobre la fauna del resort. Lo grabó en la Fase 1 hacia las 18:00. En él se puede ver un gavilán con un pájaro negro, probablemente un estornino, entre sus patas.

This time it was our neighbour Mario who sent us a video (37") about the fauna of the resort. He shot it in Phase 1 around 18:00. You can see a Sparrowhawk with a bird, probably a Spotless Starling, between its legs.

Ventajas del uso de plantas autóctonas / Advantages of using native plants

Nos hemos puesto en contacto con ANSE (Asociación de Naturalistas del Sudeste), la más importante organización de defensa del medioambiente de esta zona de España. Hemos hablado de la reforma del paisajismo del resort y unos de sus socios nos ha comentado lo siguiente.

El uso de vegetación autóctona en nuestros jardines lleva aparejado una serie de benéficos constatables:

• Ahorro de agua (algo importante en el sureste peninsular español por su climatología).
• Ahorro de mantenimiento (podas,tratamientos fitosanitarios…).
• Económicamente es mucho más barato. 
• Sirve para integrar un jardín en el entorno natural evitando que exista una barrera con él.
• Es fuente de alimento para la fauna silvestre que así es atraída.
• Es punto de refugio de animales. 
• Es un foco de dispersión de semillas que favorece claramente la reforestación natural.

Resumiendo, creemos que es sin duda la mejor solución para la jardinería de Hacienda Riquelme. Infinitamente mejor que convertirla en un parque tematico.

We have contacted ANSE (Association of Naturalists of the Southeast), the most important organization for the defense of the environment in this area of Spain. We have talked about the landscaping renovation of the resort and one of its partners has told us the following.

The use of native vegetation in our gardens entails a series of verifiable benefits:

• Water saving (something important in the southeast of the Spanish peninsula due to its climatology).
• Maintenance savings (pruning, phytosanitary treatments...).
• Economically it is much cheaper.
• It serves to integrate a garden in the natural environment avoiding that there is a barrier with it.
• It is a source of food for wildlife that is thus attracted.
• It is an animal refuge point.
• It is a source of seed dispersal that clearly favors natural reforestation.

In short, we believe that it is undoubtedly the best solution for gardening at Hacienda Riquelme. Infinitely better than turning it into a theme park.

La flora y la fauna silvestres en Hacienda Riquelme / Wild flora and fauna at Hacienda Riquelme

Desde sus inicios en marzo de 2010, este blog ha publicado docenas de entradas sobre fauna y flora. Muchas eran específicas del resort o con informaciones útiles aplicables a él. En la página Índice de entradas del blog encontrará una lista con la mayoría de ellas.

En la entrada Especies silvestres mediterráneas con valor ornamental hablamos de un libro editado por el Gobierno de Murcia que merece la pena leer antes de aprobar el proyecto de reforma de la jardinería. Ahorraríamos mucha agua y dinero y el resort mantendría su estilo original. El libro se puede descargar con este enlace.

Since its start in March 2010, this blog has published dozens of posts on fauna and flora. Many of them were resort-specific or including useful information applicable to it. In the Blog post index page you can find a list with most of them.

In the post Mediterranean wild species with ornamental value we talked about a book published by the Government of Murcia that is worth reading before approving the gardening reform project. We would save a lot of water and money and the resort would keep its original style. The book can be downloaded with this link.

En la entrada La vida silvestre se aficiona al golf reproducíamos un documentado artículo sobre Hacienda Riquelme publicado en el periódico La Verdad. La vida silvestre en el campo de golf no es independiente de la del resto del resort. Por eso, el proyecto de reforma de la jardinería puede ser catastrófico para nuestra biodiversidad. In the post Wildlife is becoming fond of golf we reproduced a well-documented article about Hacienda Riquelme that was published in the newspaper La Verdad. The wildlife on the golf course is not separate from the rest of the resort. Therefore, the gardening reform project can be catastrophic for our biodiversity. Estorninos negros / Spotless Starlings

Hacienda Riquelme es un buen lugar para observar aves. Los estorninos negros son especialmente abundantes en el resort y no es raro ver bandadas de miles de ellos haciendo espectaculares acrobacias. Un ejemplo es este vídeo (44") grabado por nuestra vecina Carmen, que ha tenido la amabilidad de enviarnos.

Hacienda Riquelme is a good place for birdwatching. Spotless starlings are especially abundant in the resort and you can often see huge flocks doing spectacular acrobatics (murmuring). An example is this video (44") shot by our neighbour Carmen that she has kindly sent us.

Otro erizo en el resort / Another hedgehog at the resort

Hacia las 17:30 del pasado 21 de diciembre, Carmen, una vecina que circulaba en coche hacia la salida del resort, tuvo que parar cerca del nº200 de la calle Atlántico. La razón fue un erizo cruzando la calzada. Nuestra vecina se bajó del coche, se aseguró que nadie atropellara al animal y grabó el breve vídeo (30") siguiente ¡Hay vida silvestre en el resort y vecinos que la aprecian!

Around 17:30 on December 21, Carmen, a neighbour driving to the resort exit, had to stop near number 200 of Atlántico street. The reason was a hedgehog crossing the road. Our neighbour got out of the car, made sure that nobody ran over the animal and recorded the short video (30") below. There is wildlife in the resort and there are neighbours that appreciate it!

No es la primera vez que nos envían un vídeo o fotos de un erizo en Hacienda Riquelme. Puede verlos en las entradas Un erizo en el resort (2019) y El erizo y la lagartija (2020).

It is not the first time that people has sent us a video or photos of a hedgehog at Hacienda Riquelme. You can see them in the posts A hedgehog at the resort (2019) and The hedgehog and the lizard (2020).

Un ibis sagrado cerca de Hacienda Riquelme / A sacred ibis near Hacienda Riquelme

Susana, la veterinaria de Sucina (Centro Veterinario Petlovers), nos ha enviado esta foto de un ibis sagrado, que fue tomada cerca de Hacienda Riquelme.

El ibis sagrado es una ave muy rara en España. En la Guía de Aves de España de la Sociedad Española de Ornitología (SEO BirdLife) dicen que en España se han observado apenas unas 20 parejas entre 1994 y 2004, aunque esta especie está en claro aumento.

John Girdley, nuestro vecino, entomólogo y ornitólogo, cree que también podría ser un ejemplar escapado de cautividad o un ave vagabunda en España.

Susana, Sucina's vet (Petlovers Veterinary Center), has sent us this photo of a sacred ibis, that was taken near Hacienda Riquelme.

The sacred ibis is a very rare bird in Spain. In the Bird Guide of Spain of the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO BirdLife) they say that in Spain only about 20 pairs have been recorded between 1994 and 2004, although this species is clearly increasing.

John Girdley, our neighbor, entomologist and ornithologist, believes that it could also be a specimen escaped from captivity or a vagrant bird in Spain.

Nuestro amigo Carlos Rebollo se supera con este nuevo vídeo de una hembra de ánade azulón y su numerosa prole. Lo más enternecedor que hemos visto en la maravillosa primavera en Hacienda Riquelme ¡Disfrútelo!

Our friend Carlos Rebollo surprises us now with this new video about a female mallard duck and its many chicks. The most tender scene we have ever seen in the wonderful Hacienda Riquelme spring. Enjoy it!

Un lagarto ocelado en el resort / An ocellated lizard at the resort

Una vez más, nuestro querido amigo y greenkeeper Carlos Rebollo nos ha enviado un breve vídeo sobre la fauna silvestre presente en Hacienda Riquelme. En este caso se trata de un lagarto ocelado.

No es la primera vez que se ve esta especie en el resort. Por desgracia, los gatos suelen acabar con ellos, igual que ocurre con muchos polluelos de las aves que crían en los alrededores de los lagos.

Once again, our dear friend and greenkeeper Carlos Rebollo has sent us a short video about the wildlife present at Hacienda Riquelme. In this case it is about an ocellated lizard.

This is not the first time this species has been seen at the resort. Unfortunately, cats often kill them, such as they do with many chicks of breeding birds around the lakes.

En estos tiempos de aislamiento en casa debido al Covid 19, nuestro greenkeeper Carlos Rebollo ha tenido la amabilidad de enviarnos este breve vídeo grabado en una orilla del lago grande. En él se puede ver a una gallineta con dos polluelos que utilizan los cañaverales como refugio.

Resulta esperanzador apreciar como la vida se abre paso, en este caso de unas aves sometidas a la presión que sobre ellas ejercen a diario los numerosos gatos existentes en el resort.

In these times of home isolation due to the Covid-19, our greenkeeper Carlos Rebollo has kindly sent us this short video, shot on an edge of the big lake. In it, you can see a moorthen with two chicks using the reedbeds as their refuge.

It is encouraging to note how life makes its way, in this case of some birds that are under the presure exerted on them everyday by the many cats existing in the resort.

El pasado viernes 13, coincidiendo con la peor gota fría en muchos años, el diario La Verdad publicó un excelente artículo dedicado a la vida silvestre en Hacienda Riquelme y al greenkeeper, Carlos Rebollo.

Para nosotros es muy grato comprobar que hay empleados y propietarios de campos de golf que aprecian y cuidan la naturaleza y el medio ambiente, en este caso de nuestro resort.

Last Friday the 13th, coinciding with the worst 'gota fría' (literally, cold drop, extremely heavy rains) in many years, the newspaper La Verdad published an excellent article dedicated to wildlife in Hacienda Riquelme and the greenkeeper, Carlos Rebollo.

It is good to be able to confirm that there are employees and owners of golf courses that appreciate and take care of nature and the environment, in this case of our own resort.

Libélula / Dragonfly

Birds are not the only flying wildlife in the resort. This dragonfly, with a 12 cm wingspan, is an example. Do not be afraid, dragonflies are harmless and even beautiful.

Las aves no son la única fauna silvestre que vuela del resort. Esta libélula, de más de 12 cm de envergadura, es un ejemplo. No tenga miedo, las libélulas son inofensivas e incluso bonitas.

Little Owl. A noisy family of Little Owls with at least three members could be seen on top the Phase 1 fence, every night at dusk.

Mochuelo común. Una ruidosa familia de mochuelos de al menos tres miembros se podía ver encima de la valla de la Fase 1, cada día al oscurecer.

Black Redstart. A very common, late autumn and winter visitor to the resort.

Colirrojo tizón. Un visitante muy común del resort a finales de otoño y durante el invierno.

House Sparrows. A group of House Sparrows eating palm tree fruits.

Gorriones comunes. Un grupo de gorriones come los frutos de una palmera.

Praying Mantis. A Praying Mantis was found preying on insects attracted to a moth trap.

Mantis religiosa. Una mantis religiosa fue encontrada comiéndose muchas de las polillas caídas en una trampa.

Recent rains had encouraged wildflowers to bloom.
