Can a golf course become a nature reserve?

In September 2020, the website Viajes National Geographic published the article Can a golf course become a nature reserve? where it was informed that PGA Catalunya Resort had been awarded as the resort more and better committed to sustainability and the natural protection in the whole planet.

The CEO of the resort started by hiring the biologist and landscaper Oriol Dalmau. He began by taking charge of a vegetable garden that supplied both the residents of the complex's homes and the kitchen of the restaurants and other services. The pest control needs of the venue, added to a commitment by the golf world to reduce the use of phytosanitary products to reduce the impact of these chemicals on the players, led Dalmau to make a series of environmental management proposals with which he convinced to the managers of the resort. Today the results have proved him right.

The first pillar on which the changes are based is water consumption. By law, filtered wastewater has to be used, and thanks to improved filter systems, a purity that brings life is achieved. As a clear example, the tortoises of the Mauremys Caspica variety that have moved from the Empordà wetlands to here seeking refuge. An ecosystem of aquatic plants and indigenous fish has flourished around them, making the lakes not just a challenge for golfers, but an explosion of life.

The second pillar is a flora that goes beyond the monoculture of grasses that nature experts have criticized so much. Oriol found here a mosaic landscape that favours the proliferation of small forest and aquatic ecosystems where birds such as kingfishers, gray herons or woodpeckers have found a home. A panorama that has only been concerned with preserving and encouraging animals and plants to find here a favorable environment to live.

And the third pillar is the drastic reduction in the use of phytosanitary products and chemicals, which in its day was a lesser and necessary evil on every golf course. At the heart of this measure is the welfare of the player, but it brings with it an obvious benefit to the environment. This is where Dalmau's magic comes in. To overcome this challenge, he began installing bat nesting boxes to fight mosquitoes at night, introduced native fish to eat their larvae, and attracted insectivorous birds to clean the trees. And all this letting nature regulate everything. In this line, his latest action has been to transfer this system to the young vineyard that is growing on the limits of the resort. The goal is to bring organic wine to its maximum expression. In every sense.

The Instituto Acuático de Cataluña has allowed the introduction of native species and in some way gives the resort a nature reserve treatment. Along these lines, Dalmau himself points to golf as a possible solution to the lack of resources in natural parks, since it is profitable and the impact of human beings is much less noisy and invasive than that of mass tourism that usually goes to ecosystems protected. Seeing the results in terms of proliferation of flora and fauna, the idea is not just another idea.

It is the demonstration that things can be done in another way. In Hacienda Riquelme too.

En septiembre de 2020, el sitio web Viajes National Geographic publicó el artículo ¿Puede un campo de golf convertirse en una reserva natural? en el que informaba que el PGA Catalunya Resort había sido galardonado como el resort que más y mejor apuesta por la sostenibilidad y la protección natural de todo el planeta.

El CEO del resort comenzó contratando al biólogo y paisajista Oriol Dalmau, que empezó encargándose de un huerto del que se surtían tanto los vecinos de las viviendas del complejo como la cocina de los restaurantes y otros servicios. Las necesidades de control de plagas del recinto, sumado a una apuesta del mundo del golf por la reducción del uso de fitosanitarios para reducir el impacto de estos químicos en los jugadores, hizo que Dalmau realizara una serie de propuestas de gestión mediambiental con las que convenció a los gestores del resort. Hoy los resultados le han dado la razón.

El primer pilar en el que se cimentan los cambios es el consumo de agua. Por ley, se tienen que usar aguas residuales filtradas y gracias a los mejorados sistemas de filtrado se logra una pureza que trae vida. Como ejemplo claro, las tortugas de variedad Mauremys Caspica que se han trasladado desde las humedales del Empordà hasta aquí buscando refugio. A su alrededor ha florecido un ecosistema de plantas acuáticas y peces autóctonos que han hecho que los lagos no sean solo un desafío para los golfistas, sino una explosión de vida.

El segundo pilar es una flora que va más allá del monocultivo de gramíneas que tanto han criticado los expertos en naturaleza. Oriol se encontró aquí un paisaje en mosaico que favorece la proliferación de pequeños ecosistemas forestales y acuáticos donde han encontrado hogar desde aves como el martín pescador, las garzas reales o los pájaros carpinteros. Un panorama que solo se ha preocupado por preservar e incentivar para que los animales y plantas encuentren aquí un ambiente propicio para vivir.

Y el tercer pilar es la reducción drástica del uso de fitosanitarios y químicos que en su día era un mal menor y necesario en todo campo de golf. En el centro de esta medida está el bienestar del jugador, pero trae consigo un beneficio evidente para el entorno. Aquí es donde aparece la magia de Dalmau. Para solventar este desafío, comenzó a instalar cajas nido de murciélagos para luchar contra los mosquitos por la noche, introdujo peces autóctonos que se comieran a sus larvas y atrajo a pájaros insectívoros para que limpiaran los árboles. Y todo ello dejando que la naturaleza lo regule todo. En esta línea, su última actuación ha sido trasladar este sistema al viñedo joven que está creciendo en los límites del resort. El objetivo es llevar el vino ecológico a su máxima expresión. En todos los sentidos.

El Instituto Acuático de Cataluña ha permitido introducir especies autóctonas y de alguna manera da al resort un trato de reserva natural. En esta línea, el propio Dalmau apunta al golf como una posible solución a la falta de recursos de los parques naturales ya que es rentable y el impacto del ser humano es mucho menos ruidoso e invasivo que el del turismo de masas que suele acudir a ecosistemas protegidos. Viendo los resultados en términos de proliferación de flora y fauna, la idea no es una ocurrencia más.

Es la demostración de que las cosas sí se pueden hacer de otra manera. En Hacienda Riquelme también.

The photos below where taken from the highest point of the resort on June 20, 2013. This point  is located close to La Peraleja. The golf course and the resort gardening have improved when compared with their state three months ago, although things are not perfect. Especially bad is the situation of  the lakes.

Las fotos siguientes se tomaron desde el punto más alto del resort el 20 de junio de 2013. Este punto se encuentra junto a La Peraleja. El campo de golf y la jardinería del resort han mejorado en comparación con su estado hace tres meses, aunque las cosas no son perfectas. Especialmente mala es la situación de los lagos.

Cormoranes, lagos y campo de golf / Cormorants, lakes and golf course

We show here some pictures of several Cormorants, a new species that has been seen this winter for the first time in the resort. The photos were taken on February 19 and 20, 2013. They have been present since the New Year at least. They are winter visitors and will be going back north very soon.

The zoomed picture is of two birds seen on the lake between phase 1 and 2. They were part of a flock of 6. The most we ever saw together was 10.

The white throat, the overall size and the shape of the bill are important to the identification.

Mostramos aquí algunas imágenes de varios cormoranes, una nueva especie que ha sido vista por primera vez este invierno en el resort. Las fotos se tomaron el 19 y 20 de febrero de 2013. Estas aves han estado presentes al menos desde Año Nuevo. Son visitantes invernales y estarán de regreso al norte muy pronto.

La imagen ampliada es de dos aves vistas en el lago ente las fases 1 y 2. Eran parte de una bandada de 6. El máximo número que vimos juntas fueron 10.

La garganta blanca, el tamaño total y la forma del pico son importantes para su identificación.

Sightings of Swallows and House Martins hinted at the first arrival of Spring.

The second picture is of birds on the lake near phase 2.

The golf course was appallingly dry when we arrived, two rain showers helped to green it up a little before we left.

Los avistamientos de golondrinas y aviones comunes sugerían la llegada de la primavera.

La segunda imagen es de aves en el lago cerca de la fase 2.

El campo de golf estaba terriblemente seco cuando llegamos; dos chaparrones ayudaron a reverdecerlo un poco antes de irnos.

The third picture is the main lake. The water has never been so low. It has now dropped below the level of the reeds in most places. The reeds are dying because they are out of the water.

They have also been cut right back most of them, which has removed all the roosting sites for birds.

None of the expected reed bed birds were seen on this visit.

La tercera imagen es del lago grande. El agua nunca ha estado tan baja. Ha caído por debajo del nivel de los cañaverales en la mayoría de los sitios. Al quedar fuera del agua, los cañaverales se están secando.

Además, los han cortado en la mayoría de los lugares, lo que ha eliminado todos los sitios de descanso para las aves.

Ninguna de las especies que se refugian y anidan en los cañaverales ha podido ser observadas en esta visita.

Análisis del campo de golf de Hacienda Riquelme / Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course Review

Le@der online English newspaper has just published an interesting Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course Review. Following paragraphs are extracted from the review:

“Despite the fact that this course golf course was only opened in 2008 the course is in good condition with tees, greens, fairways and primary rough in good order but it is fair to say that the secondary cut of rough, hills and the side of some sides of bunkers still need some time to ‘mature’. The ‘war on the shore’ Ryder Cup match was played in 1991 at the Pete Dye designed course of Kiawah island and this course puts me in mind of that course, particularly the type of grass used and the positioning and shape of the many bunkers.

For most golfers who play this course the lasting ‘memory’ will be of the number and shear size of some of the bunkers and the rather unique method deployed by the designer to cut and shape the edges of these sand traps. The golf course is not overly long but you will have to plot your way between well placed bunkers and the 5 lakes on this 18 hole par 72 course.

The greens on this course are typical of the Jack Nicklaus style with many of the greens large in size but made smaller by slopes and run off areas and numerous changes in elevation. The opening hole is a 367 metre or 400 yard (yellow tees) uphill right to left dog-leg par 4 hole to a raised green which gives you a ‘portent’ to the rest of the round. On the front nine I particularly liked the 341 metre or 375 yard (yellow tees) par 4 ninth hole which runs around the edge of one of the lakes the full length of the hole.

The back nine starts with a gentle par 4 hole but this is followed by the tricky 11th hole of 458 metre or 504 yard right to left dog-leg par 5 around a lake which will test your nerve if going for the green in two or your lay up skills which are to a narrow landing area. The 14th hole is a 433 metre (476 yard) uphill left to right dog-leg par 5 hole which plays longer due to the ‘terrain’ and the lay of the land is pleasant to the eye but take a look at the massive bunker short and middle left of the green. My simple tip to playing this course well is for you to prevent your ball from getting ‘wet’ or ‘dusty’.”

Managing a sub-community in which most of its owners are for most of the year far away is not easy. Specific sub-community issues must be added to resort general ones. Distance hinders owners’ access to information so that they lose control and even interest in what happens in their apartment.

In Tomillo 5 they have solved this problem through new technologies by creating a website. You can visit it at Tomillo 5 Website

It is well organized, visually appealing and easy to navigate. In addition to specific sub-community information (that's transparency for you!) it contains a lot of useful data to any owner of Hacienda Riquelme. For example, recent photos of the resort, flight information, car rentals, emergency telephones, tourist resources, etc.

Location & Golf Course section deserves a special mention. It’s sure to please golf fans.

This website is in English except for its home page that is in both English and Spanish.

Gestionar una subcomunidad en la que la mayoría de sus propietarios, durante la mayor parte del año, están muy lejos no es fácil. A los temas generales del resort hay que sumar los específicos de la subcomunidad. La distancia dificulta el acceso a la información por parte de los propietarios, que pierden el control y hasta el interés por lo que ocurre en su apartamento.

Bien organizada, agradable a la vista y fácil de navegar. Además de la información específica de esa subcomunidad (¡eso es transparencia!) contiene mucha información complementaria de utilidad para cualquier propietario de Hacienda Riquelme. Por ejemplo, fotos recientes del resort, información de vuelos, alquileres de coches, teléfonos de emergencia, información turística….
Mención aparte merece la sección Location & Golf Course, que seguro será del agrado de los aficionados a este deporte.

Pozos y riego de jardines / Irrigation water wells and gardens

At the last AGM, several neighbours were very unhappy with the conditions of various contracts of the community. In particular they objected to the gardens irrigation water contract, due to the tariffs charged by CORPORACIÓN DE REUTILIZACIÓN ECOLÓGICA DE AGUAS S.L. (CREA), which belongs to the Polaris Group.

In 2009 about 200,000 m3 of water were consumed in garden irrigation. In 2010 this consumption is expected to decrease through a tighter control of it. Still, this item is budgeted for this year at € 224,000, largely due to the rising price of m3.

Several owners have devoted many hours to thoroughly investigating the situation and its possible solutions. As a result of their efforts they have just told us the following:

• Departamento de Aguas Subterráneas (Groundwater Department) of the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura has informed them that there were four groundwater wells and a spring in the former Rusticas Riquelme estate.
• On January 9, 2009 Polaris called for a change in the ownership of the wells on behalf of La Hacienda Riquelme S.L.
• Also requested was the change of use of groundwater for irrigation of golf courses and attached gardens.
• The case is not yet solved.

All this brings us to ask several questions:

• Does ‘attached gardens’ include ours?
• Why is the case still open? Has Polaris not justified they are well owners?
• If apparently we have rights on those waters, why is CREA charging us so much?

En la pasada AGM se puso de manifiesto el descontento de bastantes vecinos por las condiciones de varios contratos de la comunidad. Especialmente grave es el caso del agua de riego de los jardines, por las tarifas que nos cobra CORPORACIÓN DE REUTILIZACIÓN ECOLÓGICA DE AGUAS S.L. (CREA), perteneciente al Grupo Polaris.

En 2009 se consumieron unos 200.000 m3 de agua en el riego de jardines. En 2010 se está controlando más el consumo y se espera se reduzca. Aún así, esta partida tiene presupuestado para este año 224.000 €, en buena parte debidos al aumento del precio del m3.

Varios propietarios han dedicado muchas horas a conocer a fondo la situación y buscar posibles soluciones. Como resultado de sus gestiones nos comentan lo siguiente:

• En el Departamento de Aguas Subterráneas de la Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura les han informado que en la antigua finca de Rusticas Riquelme existían cuatro pozos de agua subterránea y un manantial.
• Con fecha 9 de enero de 2009 Polaris solicitó el cambio de titularidad de los pozos a nombre de La Hacienda Riquelme S.L.
• También solicitó el cambio de uso de las aguas subterráneas para riego de campos de golf y zonas ajardinadas anexas.
• El expediente no está resuelto todavía.

Lo anterior nos lleva a plantearnos varias preguntas. Por ejemplo:

• Esas zonas ajardinadas anexas ¿incluyen las nuestras?
• ¿Por qué el expediente no está resuelto todavía? ¿Polaris no ha demostrado que los pozos le pertenecen?
• Si en apariencia tenemos derecho a esas aguas ¿Por qué nos las están cobrando tan caras?

Alrededores de Hacienda Riquelme / Hacienda Riquelme surroundings

En la página Alrededores de H. Riquelme hemos incluido unas fotos aéreas tomadas el 3 de mayo de 2009. Llaman la atención dos cosas:

• La rica e intensiva agricultura basada en frutales e invernaderos que rodea a Hacienda Riquelme.
• Los resorts fracasados que se encuentran a muy pocos kilómetros del nuestro.

Impresiona ver los movimientos de tierras y las inversiones realizadas en proyectos inconclusos que ya veremos cómo y cuándo terminarán.
Somos realmente afortunados por haber comprado nuestro apartamento en Hacienda Riquelme, y no en otro lugar. Un bonito diseño, un buen campo de golf, una comunidad en marcha, un bajo indice de morosidad…. son activos de los que todos debemos alegrarnos.

In H. Riquelme surroundings page we have included some aerial photos taken on May 3, 2009. Two things to point out:

• The rich and intensive agriculture based on fruit trees and greenhouses surrounding Hacienda Riquelme.
• The failed resorts that are not far away from ours.

Impressive to see the land movements and investments in unfinished big projects, we'll see how and when to conclude.
We are indeed fortunate to have bought our apartment in Hacienda Riquelme, and not elsewhere. A beautiful design, a good golf course, a working and in motion neighbour community, a low rate of debtors.... These are assets for which we should all rejoice.
