El 30 de noviembre de 2023, el submarino S-81 Isaac Peral se entregó por fin a la Armada. La entrega tuvo lugar en Cartagena. Es la primera unidad de una serie de cuatro de la denominada Clase S-80 Plus, el más moderno diseño de un submarino no nuclear.

On November 30, 2023, the S-81 Isaac Peral submarine was finally delivered to the Armada. The delivery took place in Cartagena. It is the first unit of a series of four of the so-called S-80 Plus Class, the most modern design of a non-nuclear submarine.

In former posts we talked about the Peral submarine. Now we show a new submarine built in Cartagena by Navantia, the S-81 Isaac Peral. It is the first submarine of the new S-80 Plus class. To see the image in more detail, click on it with the right mouse button and download it.

El submarino Peral / The submarine Peral

Javier Sanmateo es bisnieto de Isaac Peral. Es también el autor de la mejor biografía sobre su bisabuelo escrita hasta la fecha. Como ya comentamos en la entrada 125 aniversario del sumarino Peral, Isaac Peral diseñó y construyó el primer auténtico submarino torpedero, como se le denominó en su día.

El libro escrito por Javier es mucho más que una biografía. Tras un arduo trabajo de investigación en archivos, recoge además las tramas de espionaje, los intereses comerciales y geopolíticos, las actuaciones de distintos grupos de presión y otros muchos factores que afectaron a un invento que las demás potencias tardaron muchos años en tener.

Javier Sanmateo is Isaac Peral's great-grandson. He is also the author of the best biography of his great-grandfather written to date. As we already mentioned in the post for 125th anniversary of the Peral submarine, Isaac Peral designed and built the first authentic torpedo launcher submarine, as it was called in its day.

Javier's book is much more than a biography. After an in deep archive investigation, it also collects espionage plots, commercial and geopolitical interests, actions of different pressure groups and many more factors that affected an invention that other world powers took many years to have.

 

Javier ha tenido la amabilidad de permitirnos usar en este blog dos vídeos con espectaculares infografías acerca de cómo se construyó y cómo era por dentro el submarino Peral. Los realizó el infografista Juan C. Sánchez para el periódico digital El Mundo, con el asesoramiento de Juan I. Chacón y del propio Javier. Conferencia sobre el submarino C-4 / Lecture about the submarine C-4

The C-4 was a submarine of the C Class of the Spanish Armada. It was built in the shipyard of Cartagena and delivered in 1929. She participated in the 1936-1939 Civil War on the Republican side. It sank on June 27, 1946 in an accident during manoeuvres, when approached by the destroyer Lepanto, killing all 44 crew.

70 years after this tragedy, it will be held in San Pedro del Pinatar several commemorative events, including a lecture by the submariner and expert Diego Quevedo (see picture).

El C-4 fue un submarino de la Clase C de la Armada Española construido en el astillero de Cartagena y entregado en 1929. Participó en la Guerra Civil en el bando republicano. Se hundió el 27 de junio de 1946 en un accidente en el transcurso de unas maniobras, al ser abordado por el destructor Lepanto, muriendo sus 44 tripulantes.

A punto de cumplirse os 70 años de esta tragedia, tendrán lugar en San Pedro del Pinatar diversos actos conmemorativos, que incluyen una conferencia impartida por el submarinista y experto Diego Quevedo (ver imagen).

CSS Hunley

We have written several times about the submarine Peral. But this post is about the CSS Hunley, the first rudimentary submarine that sank a ship in a war action.

CSS H. L. Hunley was a submarine of the Confederate States of America that played a small part in the American Civil War. Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship, although Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to her base. The submarine was named for her inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, shortly after she was taken into service under the control of the Confederate Army at Charleston, South Carolina.

Hemos escrito varias veces sobre el submarino Peral. Pero esta entrada es sobre el CSS Hunley, el primer rudimentario submarino que hundió un barco durante una acción de guerra.

El CSS Hunley fue un submarino de los estados Confederados de América en servicio durante un breve periodo de la Guerra de Secesión. El Hunley mostró las ventajas y los peligros de la guerra submarina. Fue el primer submarino de combate que hundió un barco de guerra, si bien el Hunley no iba completamente sumergido y tras su exitoso ataque se perdió con su tripulación antes de que pudiera retornar a su base. Al submarino se le puso el nombre de su inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley poco después de que fuera puesto en servicio bajo el control del Ejército Confederado en Charleston, Carolina del Sur.

125 aniversario del submarino Peral / 125th anniversary of the submarine Peral

On Sunday, September 8th, an extensive program of events starts in Cartagena to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the launching of the submarine Peral.

This submarine was designed by Captain Isaac Peral, who was born in Cartagena. It was the first one equipped with:

• Electric propulsion.
• Torpedo launching system.
• Depths box, allowing immersion to the specified depth, maintaining horizontality.

It was also the first submarine in history to sail for one hour submerged to 10 meters deep, and then emerging in the established coordinates.

Economic and political reasons aborted the project when the prototype had already passed successfully all the stringent tests to which he was subjected.

Few months ago, the submarine was moved from the promenade to a building attached to the Naval Museum where it has been restored and will be exhibited to the public.

El domingo 8 de septiembre comienza en Cartagena un amplio programa de actos para conmemorar los 125 años de la botadura del submarino Peral.

Diseñado por el teniente de navío Isaac Peral, natural de Cartagena, este submarino fue el primero con:

• Propulsión eléctrica.
• Sistema de lanzamiento de torpedos.
• Caja de profundidades, que permitía la inmersión a la profundidad deseada manteniendo la horizontalidad.

También fue el primer submarino de la historia que navegó una hora sumergido a 10 metros de profundidad, emergiendo en las coordenadas establecidas.

Razones económicas y políticas abortaron el proyecto cuando el prototipo ya había superado con éxito todas las exigentes pruebas a las que fue sometido.

El submarino fue trasladado hace unos meses desde el paseo marítimo hasta una nave anexa al Museo Naval donde ha sido restaurado y se expondrá al público.
