Months ago, a list of birds seen or heard in Hacienda Riquelme was included in the page of this blog Nature and bird watching. We believe that this is valuable information, patiently gathered by our neighbour John Girdley through field observations.
John has updated the list with some new birds. The number of identified species is 67. The new ones are in red. Visit the page and click on the list of birds to enlarge.
En la página de este blog Naturaleza y observación de aves incluimos hace meses una lista de las aves vistas u oídas en Hacienda Riquelme. Creemos que es una información valiosa, pacientemente recopilada a partir de observaciones de campo por nuestro vecino John Girdley.

Las golondrinas comen mosquitos / Swallows eat mosquitoes
Our wildlife expert, John, has just sent us this interesting contribution.
Swallow and Martins eat Mosquitoes. Communities in other parts of Spain have found that by encouraging Swallows and Martins, the summertime Mosquito problem has been much reduced.
Conversely, another community on the Costa del Sol, decided that it would remove all the nests in the interests of having a “tidy resort” and suffered from a plague of mosquitoes for the rest of the year.
It is possible to buy artificial nests to encourage these birds.

This is a much more environmentally sound solution than using chemical sprays.

Las golondrinas y los aviones comen mosquitos. Comunidades de otras partes de España han comprobado que fomentando la presencia de ambas especies de pájaros, el problema de los mosquitos en verano disminuye mucho.
Por el contrario, otra comunidad de la Costa del Sol que decidió eliminar todos los nidos a fin de tener un complejo “limpio y ordenado", sufrió una plaga de mosquitos durante el resto del año.
Es posible comprar nidos artificiales para promover la presencia de estas aves.
